Went out this weekend with the intention of exploring a few new lakes in the Algonquin Highlands region. The plan was to target lake trout on Saturday and whitefish on Sunday. We got out onto the lake Saturday and were pleasantly surprised with the surface conditions. A light layer of snow above hard crusted slush made for ideal walking conditions. We walked 2 km to our first spot and set up in about 45'. Within minutes we were marking fish throughout the water column and it wasn't long before we had landed several small lake trout. The activity continued for the next few hours, in total we brought 11 topside.
At the recommendation of Mykola, we headed to another lake nearby where we were staying to try our luck at sundown for walleye. Not far from shore, we set up with an hour or so of daylight left. Immediately we began marking fish on bottom. Soon after, wootang89 landed a walleye.
The next day we headed to a different lake in pursuit of whitefish (again, thanks to Mykola for his advice and direction). This lake was overall shallower in comparison to the lake we had fished the day before but contained a variety of unique structure. We tried multiple locations from 25'-65' and pulled up fish at each stop. Lake trout, perch and even a couple of accidental out of season smallmouth bass but no whitefish. In total 7 lake trout, 3 smallmouth bass and a handful of perch. All in all, a successful weekend of fishing new waters and some beautiful weather/conditions as well!
