Is walking out 1km from Beaverton to 18 fow enough for perch fishing or do you have to go further out to deeper water? I'm used to Cook's Bay and Port Bolster but don't know anything about the Beaverton perch grounds.

I would start at 18
If that doesn't work, keep trying deeper until you find them

On this poor ice just be careful or the perch will find you! And we don’t want that….

Walking should be great with no snow. I would try 25-35 fow however this will be further out

I was with Floyed Hales and Tim Hales.
Their perch huts were in 27 - 34 fow, about 1 couple of miles from shore.
