Tips on keeping my Hut tied down in high winds

And when fishing is all said and done, just one push down of the anchor, the anchor is out of the hole, which is even quicker than loosening/unscrewing a screw:-)

I use a lag bolts and a washer it allows it fasten it tight to the ice. The wind circled around that day needed to plan that I got pushed out by the wind and on the way in at noon the wind pushed me in . Was walking 6.4 km an hour with ease lol and the wind was blowing the sleigh even faster the odd time lol.


Also I like putting the wind side to a corner I only use 1 yesterday in the corner and use the slush from the inside to banks the inside on the flap. Then if it's not windy I just use the slush to hold it. I try to use as little as possible ankers when I bring the hut. If it's nice out I don't even bring the hut just enjoy the scenery. With the lag bolts you just hammer it with the end of the socket wrench then it usually goes in pretty good and it all fits in a pocket.

Always make sure everything thing is tight ,if it's moving around and lifting it's not tight. It's why I use the bolts and washer gets the corner pressed right to the ice.

rope with truckers hitch would make quite tight If using cams i always tie a couple of 1/2 hitches on the back side of them in case they slip

I'm glad someone shared this hazard if left as empty holes. First hand witness here to the damage empty holes can do to a leg. (This obviously goes for holes used to stand augers upright.) Just bad.

like most of the others agree, this is not an issue with the anchors: as long as they're caught in black ice, won't come out.

beyond that, if winds are strong enough better stay home.

it could've been worse: tethers hold, but tent poles snap. maybe wouldn't have to walk to get it still whole from someone's yard, instead you'd have to go to the store to get a new one or worse, tethers ripped from the tent itself so in that case you;re looking at both collecting a broken tent AND buying a new one

so cheer up, it can always get worse

I've had the same problem a few times last year having to chase my tent.

Now I anchor two sides into the ice with the standard things that came with it and for the wind swept side I use my sled with skies and auger placed on top turned sideways (works great).

Bungee cords instead of those straps makes life easier and gives it a little more forgiveness imo.

Those fancy anchors do look sweet but that's more weight to carry.

Stay home because it's windy and do chores/renos or go fishing? Hum.....

i used to go out in all kinds of weather, but in the last few years or so , i just can't justify a 2.5 hour drive and fish in miserable conditions, ie very strong winds unless I rent a hut


But I do miss those days when that forecast if off

I tend not to go out on those really windy days. I have a 3 man pull over that if it is windy and no one siding on the seats it will blow over, so i put an eye bolt in the side in the middle of the length and you a screw in anchor now. I like the bungee idea as I find anything in a strong wind that doesn't have some give will ripe.

I just picked up these Cam straps from Crappy Tire, they are on sale in Aurora for $18.99. This will make holding it down much better.

I have the same straps. I use them to secure my gear to the Smitty sled then use them to anchor the hut.
