I got a nice 11 inch with an empty hook. Was using  a 2 way in vb sight fishing and it went for the bead lol.

How wad the ice in vb?

It was about 8.5 but that was 9 days ago. The ferry path opened alot since and refroze and snow covered so stay clear of the path. It got pretty wide early last week.

I picked up a nice scoop of minnows from Casey's on the weekend and I went out from Port Bolster on the weekend. There is a lot of snow on the lake so walking long distance can be a challenge! No problem going out with machine. There is a small pressure crack closer to shore but it is easy to cross over. I drove out far into deeper water 30Ft area. The Perch was biting VERY LIGHT........they were not aggressive at all. Because I was fishing in a warm portable hut (......so the water in the hole was always open... ) I had one rod set up with my own special design of .." Slip float" set up with live minnows from Taj.... I set up so the bait is about 1 feet above the bottom. This set up so sensitive the slip float showing me the slightest movements when the fish is very finicky and just slowly takes the bait. At the slightest movements of my slip float I set the hook and EVERTIME I got the perch. I managed to get a few dozen fish this way but many small ones I throw back.

I managed to get about a dozen good size ....keepers over 10 inches......but in one word the bite was SLOW. That is the reason I switched to my supersensitive ..: slip float" set up.

If perch is aggressive .....they will hit anything.......There was one time They hit an empty hook , believe it or not....LOL.. ........it is true.

I use a slip float as well. They can be sensitive enough that a lively minnow will cause it to twitch a bit. In Muskoka fishing for(usually) small lakers that are picky eaters it is common the the float bobs a bit a couple of times before the fish submerges it---time to set the hook.

I would be very interested in seeing your own special float. I, likewise, have made my own clip on floats. I don't like the ones with the hole thru the center. Maybe we can exchange pix via PM---prob not a good idea to post them here lest somebody steal the design and get them patented first!!
