Want to take the boy out for some perch!, Ice fishing Cooks Bay

Hey folks,

My son is 5 and was thinking of getting him out on Cook's over the break. If someone could answer a few questions, that would be most helpful!

1. Is it safe right now to be out on Cooks?
2. If we want to get into perch (jumbos would be nice! or just catch something..) where should we head out from? Is there parking? Costs?
3. I do have na old popup hut (no heater though). Would we be better off with a hut operator?
4. If a hut operator is advisable, any recommendations?
5. What about live bait? Do they provide? Is there any live bait shops in the areas I'm going to? I recall one at Gilford?

I would suggest using an operator if you're able to - they will be on fish. The challenge is most will be wrapping up on the 15th - huts need to be off by then. So an early week adventure would be perfect.

There's a number of hut guys in Cooks - Hot Box Huts runs a good operation (on Innisfil side). I'm not sure about the easat side. (Casey's comes to mind, but I'm not sure where exactly they are located).

PS. I used to take my guys out when they were young - bring some extra activities for them. Even when it's a good bite, the young ones sometimes don't have the attention span. And lots of snacks and hot chocolate etc.

thanks very much! Yeah, I hear you about the attention span... I am wondering if I should even wait another year or 2 before taking him. Ive seen hot box youtube vids... they look professional

If an operator is in your budget, it's not a bad idea for a first outing with a youngster. Equipment, transport, and setup would be privided = less stress getting ready. It will also give you a real experience with your youngster's interest/enjoyment/focus. However you plan the "mission", sooner is better than later to get them involved and biuld a young fishing buddy. For sure! Don't over think it.

Give Caseys in Port Bolster a call....you will not be sorry. He is fully equipped....heated huts....supplies the minnows....awesome operator.....I use him all the time....he checks on you through the day.....gives you a ride out and a ride back. Bring Ice fishing rods, tackle, a lunch, there is a restaurant there for before or after your fishing.....Taj is the operators name and he will take the worries out for you and answer all your questions. I can't agree more! A great operator, and I have been going to a few operators over the past few decades...and doing my own walkouts or using Casey's taxi service. Definitely the best people and superb service. I spoke with them yesterday and they are open past Mar 15 with a taxi service and minnows, etc. They suggested that I call first just so they are ready for our arrival.
