I drill my holes with a 8 inch auger. I had 3 inches of black ice to chip. The holes were chiped out yesterday. Its very discouraging and a lot of work. I only had it in me to chip 2 of them today. I'm out now wish me luck couldn't get any pin heads for crappies.

Chainsaw every once in a while. Opens it up for clear chipping or even redrilling through clean ice

A good spud bar should do the trick but after some time the hut should be moved and fresh holes drilled. As Drew stated you can cut a trough with a chainsaw just empty the bar oil reservoir and clean any oil off of the chain and bar or you're in for a mess.

If you go often, leave the heat on.

I don't own a shack but given how snow is such a great insulator, wouldn't piles of snow over the holes help a lot? Just my 2 cents

when i had a perm hut, it was always chain sawed and if I was able to go 2 days in a row......heater left on low

used to sink my minnows below the cut out hole also in a bucket

Thank you for all the suggestions. I wish I could pull the trigger on a chainsaw with a 20 inch bar.
I put down some rigid foam on top of the holes last time out. A co worker suggested cutting out pieces to put inside the holes next time. He also suggested skirting the opening in the hut to give a thermal break.

I just started a new post about a new topic on
Manual auger with chipper blades and a drill. Perhaps that could be the solution.

Again thanks for the suggestions I may try leaving the heater on low if going the following day.

take some scrap pieces of 2' styrofoam = cut to fit over the holes with as much overlap on top of ice as you can.

unless its -20 or colder, when you lift the styrofoam - usually just a skim of ice to chip out.

I used to have a few pieces that fit nice, I would use as a seat when in the hut.

Roof top heating torch should do the trick.
