QUOTE (Goshawk @ Mar 21, 2023 - 06:54 pm)
Has anyone seen any decent amount of open water on Balsam or Sturgeon yet? Getting anxious to get the boat in and search for some crappie.
I would say April 12th or 13th for Sturgeon and the following week for Balsam Lionel. I can't get up there until the 17th. That's if I go at all....other priorities could keep me off the water until end of April. My friend will call me when he catches his first crappie. All he has to do is walk out to his back yard and cast into the lake from his dock. My other friend has to walk a block to his dock. These guys sure have a tough life. LOL. If they don't catch fish off their docks, then in the boat they go. Like I said, a real tough life. LOL. I will let you know when the crappie get hungry.

Main body of Sturgeon as observed by Long Beach (western shore) 2 pm today is frozen solid as far as you can see towards caygeon, and south to Linsay.. The shorelines are opening , but there is little change of colour all the way out. Just open in current areas as the Fenelon dam is blasting through, although the lake is still 2-3 feet down at winter level. soon though 2 weeks I presume, weather depending of course.

Well saw my first boat yesterday. Two dudes in a jon boat with what looked like a 9.9hp on the back. No life jackets! Ran it up on the ice to get to a cottage on an island.
