Hi Folks: We haven't been able to head out on the lake all winter (until this week) due to a variety of resons including: poor weather and ice conditions along with life got in the way.
We tentatively planned 2 daily trips out on the lake (Monday and Tuesday this week) and thanks to Adrian0524's report on the ice conditions in the Snake Island area last Sunday we were up early Monday morning and headed out to the lake.
Early Monday morning the ice conditions were near perfect - no snow drifts, not slippery or wet and more than 8 inches thick. All in all perfect conditions for the ATV. The combined warm, sunny weather during the day resulted in slightly wet/slushy conditions later in the day but nothing extreme and be managed to head home without getting soaked as we cross the lake on our ATV.
I monitored the over night temperature Monday evening and it didn't drop below 3C and I was afraid the wet conditions on top of the lake late Monday probably didn't freeze over but we were determined to head out on the lake on Tuesday.
Tuesday morning the lake surface was still wet but didn't pose a problem travelling with an ATV. While we were on the west side of Snake Island we heard a really loud rumble that lasted for 5-10 seconds) which was followed by a much shorter, quieter rumble around 1:00 pm. Not sure if the rumble was the ice talking, thunder or an earthquake but needless -to-say it caught our attention.
On our return trip to the mainland early Tuesday evening the lake surface was wet and slushy and the top layer of the ice had deteriorated considerably over the last 24 hours which I suspect will continue given the long range weather forecast.
