I'll be out. But don't kid yourself, opener doesnt hold the same charm it used to. People have been fishing whities and Lakers since the ice went out. I see people every day in 80 fow plus. "Fishing for perch"
Anyway have a good opener everyone, be safe and good luck.

Got out at 8:30am, just in time for them to start hitting. Beautiful day, at least 100 boats out there for the opener. About 20c with no wind at 9am.
Boats started to leave around 9am - perfect! Obviously, they don't know when these big boys like to hit.
They started to hit around 9:30am or so. Ended up going to 1 for 3.. eek.
First one, run at lure, did not respond in time as I was setting something up.
Second one, run at lure, hook up, drag wasn't set properly and they spit it out.
Third one, Cassie ends up hooking one up and we get it in the boat.
Unfortunately, this one got the hooks in the gills and didn't make it. We always try to return fish to the lake. It will be harvested in full and not wasted.

I always feel bad when I kill these magnificent fish. But we don't waste it. Either we'll cook it up, give it to a friend, or my son who loves cooking them for himself.
Just kinda shitty that the first one of the season got gilled. Bad omen? You can see my depth descender on the seat in the bloody boat picture, ready to be used... but the amount of blood coming out of that fish, it was evident that was a lost cause.

Had this one hooked deep a few years back. Person I was with tried to do the surgical work while I held the fish. The fish went ape crap crazy and the person helping me got my lure back with an entire gill raker still attached to it.
