Fished 11-1:30 today, almost didn’t make it as I have a wicked cold again, but snuck out anyway by myself to play with some lakers. The trout were active today and they went 3 for 7. If I had a stinger hook I bet I’d land more but hey active enough I just played it safe. They were hitting the 4” bio-minnow natural colours, on a heavy jig head.
I fished in the main basin (very small lake) in 65 fow, jigged about 5-10ft above a consistent layer of smelts which averaged 10ft thick on bottom. I even caught a few. I would jig well above them so I could see the lakers skyrocket and smash the lure, sometimes 3 or four times before I hook them. It was a fun day. Lake like glass the entire time I was out… and of course… one day I’ll remember sun screen.
21” in slot released, 22” kept for dinner, and a long skinny 30” released, was very different from the other two.
Belly had a smelt, a herring, and perch, all about the same size as my bait.
Gonna be a tasty dinner!
Surface temps at a whopping 62f…. So I didn’t mess around with pictures, as I’m alone, and got them back in water asap after a quick measurement. The slot lakes have been good to me this year.
