He said he was hoping that we didn’t catch anything that day. When I asked him why he didn’t want to catch anything he responded and said, if we didn’t catch anything today, I would know that I wasn’t doing anything wrong by myself because I normally don’t catch anything. Since we did quite a few fish, he then had to realize he had a lot to learn. 😂😂
Yes, we had this exchange, laughing a lot, and I was thinking of posting it here a bit later. (I had another fishing trip yesterday. This time I went with my wife to GB, an almost 24 hour trip - from home to home. Came back empty handed again, but mostly (I believe) due to bad weather - quite strong wind and rain in the afternoon.. We were soaked and my wife doesn’t like it much…)

so what was the important rigging lesson learned?
Well a lot of small things, but as you all probably know these small things are that make the difference in fishing… as well as in other aspects of our life… For example, apparently I was using wrong lures - spoons and other stuff. Even though everybody says otherwise, I was stuck with the impression that it doesn’t really matter what spoons you use, since you can get fish at almost any bait. (And I was still getting some fish as well!) So, Dave proved to me that I was wrong. I changed my lures during rigging from time to time, but for some reason I put away the spoons which are most close to what Dave was using. Dave also strongly insists that frequent change not producing lures is very important. Another thing is using a dipsy divers. I tried it a couple of times and screwed it up completely and put them away since… Dave handled it very easily… I’ll try to use it again.. And again, to be honest, perhaps the most interesting thing during this trip were our discussions… At many points we agreed, at some not so… Yes, being for 6 hours in the boat with such a knowledgeable, experienced and skillful fisherman as Dave - it is a real pleasure and I probably will refer to that time in Dave's boat for a long time to come on my next fishing rigging trips. Before that I was only learning from myself, now I can refer my mind to the pro.

Kind words Markdv but I am not pro. I am still and always learning. When we stop opening our eyes and learning we lose the ability to improve.
I started with a basis of knowledge from taking to those better than me and more knowledgeable. Then I tried what I learned and caught some fish. Then had great experiences with people I highly admire like Longshank and Greg Ameil who are both incredible guides. Those experiences and discussions improved my success. I also love to experiment and found some things very few people do and they work very well.
I am not pro. I do believe all knowledge we gain is only borrowed and it’s our job to pass it on just as it was passed to us. 👍🏻
