Gord Pfizer was talking about invasive species on another fishing show. Could have been the same one.
They are so hard to stop once they are in the water system.

If the invasive species are a pond... pull a Trump... use Bleach!

Thought I would move this here, since it's Burlington and Great Lakes Region.

Cheers!

I have always thought we should start breeding and supplying pet shop with native species yet we have laws against that. We bring non native species in that get released and they damage the environment and out compete native species.

Great example of this is painted turtles. They have been threatened in the past and yet non native Red Ear Slider turtles are sold at pet stores and release when people can’t manage them. It is illegal to release them but not everyone is knowledgeable about laws or non native species impact. Why not just raise painted Turtles for the pet trade? They are better looking and would bolster populations if people released them.
Same goes for this crayfish and a vast amount of native fish species.
Seems like an easy solution to some of the problem.

It may not be a great idea to raise natives. The same thing will happen and you may start to have diseases introduced into the wild population. The other problem is people may not buy them anymore and go an catch them legally or illegally (not a good thing to do either as they can keep catching and "killing" and not really care much about their native species pets since they may be "free" and plentiful to replace). Maybe a better solution is making sure the pet stores can only sell species that WILL die in our environment if released intentionally or accidentally. And the responsibility should be on those wanting to make money on selling these things to show (with decent research) that the species they want to sell can't live in our environment. Tropical species usually are better bets...people will still try to release them but the sooner they will die, the less chance of disease of becoming invasive.
