Not very deep. Just a 1/2 ounce spoon flatlined behind the canoe on a slow paddle one long cast behind the boat. I would say maybe 3-5 feet. I would say I prefer to be shallow rather than deep. I did cast an entire shore structure and never had a hit until I paralleled shore about an average cast away. We often catch them casting to fallen trees or floating logs or other shore structure but not yesterday. I hit all fish trolling.
Nice fish Bill and yup their delicious,, same here trolled for silver salmon with the riggers on Saturday ..not a touch ...tried flat lining the mud line 3 fish ..never figure them out....Dave

Nice fish! Deer doesn’t look like it’s been there too long I wonder if it drowned trying to cross the lake post ice? I’d say the turtles will be on it at some point soon.

That’s what I thought likely happened to it. I have come across others as well in early spring.
One thing for sure… I don’t trust their tracks on the ice as an indicator of safe ice!

NICE splake !!! I was out on a back lake in the Dorset area early Sunday morning. I had one on in about 5 casts but it got off before I could net it. Then nothing for the next 3.5 hours. I cast to downed trees, I trolled the sunny side of the lake, I trolled steep cliffs. Maybe I should have started in the middle of the day like you did ??? Water is warming and soon they wont be in the shallows...may try this weekend again ?? I have been having luck with a smaller 5 of diamonds but not sure what else I should be using ?? ROOK
