Well done Jamie.Good on you for the conservation efforts.
I wish ministry would allow us to keep two overs on the Walleye in my zone.Unfortunately people have to keep 16 and under which to me is stupid. They are babies at this size.Imop

Totally agree with you on that Dale. Yes babies for sure, let them live! In the middle of Ontario and further north there is an invisible growth line for fish. In Lake Erie the walleye grow faster, mature quicker, but die younger. The further north you fish, the walleye grow slower, mature slower, but live longer. "So let the babies live I say!" Nothing wrong with slot sizes and limits, but make them applicable. There are many lakes side by side, with different regulations. Let's get the regulations relevant to the problem at hand. Let's get walleye stalking to more than just a few specific lakes. I have said many times the walleye limit should be two for a sportsman license. Let's move the opener for walleye to the third or fourth Saturday in May, instead of the second etc. Depending what zone you fish in. It's only one week, and it would give the late spawners a better chance at a good hatch. Back to the slot and limits, this is just a hypothetical number. Limit being 2 walleye with a slot of 20 inches to say 24. This saves the younger walleye to get a few years of spawning in before they are killed. And also saves the larger to monster walleye to continue with producing larger, but not quite as viable eggs. Monster walleye will in turn produce bigger eggs. Not as many of those eggs hatch, but that is the life cycle of a big fish. Those bigger eggs that survive will make bigger walleye, that hopefully make it back to the size of their ancestors. I fish Balsam and do keep a bigger fish from time to time, as seen in my photos posted. I make no apologies for keeping 1 or 2 bigger walleye, on occasion. I release hundreds of walleye every year, conservation is the only true way to save a species. If the government needs more money to improve our fishing adventures, double the price of my fishing license. And double the fines for breaking the regulations. I have no problem paying more, if it helps the fish. And I have no problem watching someone squirm, and digging deep into their wallet for breaking the regulations.

I don't know about doubling the fishing license, but the fine for breaking the regs should be more like quadrupled, then maybe people will stop keeping more than their limits.

Yes for sure, make the fines huge for violating the fishing regulations. I can't believe that a human being can treat such beautiful creatures and nature with such disrespect.

Nice night out, good report CM. Two fish limit would make sense, like they did with lakers when I was a kid.

Two is a small number, but if it helps the walleye population, who could argue with that. I am assuming it has been a benefit to the Lakers in your area. Thank you for the comment Drew.

I’m still fairly new to walleye fishing and I had to check that the sport limit was in fact 4, I had assumed it was 2. I agree, there’s no need for a boat with 2 fishermen to bag 8 walleye. Now if we can work on getting that whitefish limit down from 12…

We do have whitefish in the Kawarthas, but I do not target them at all. 12 does seem like a high number. I see it is a 12 fish limit in almost all of the zones in Ontario.

Thanks Jay it was a lucky night. Trying to get out there again tonight. No bugs tonight and temperature going down to 4 degrees. Gusty north wind though, so will have to hide here and there to stay warm. It's going to be chilly out in the open.

You guys are funny and make me smile. It's not work, it's fishing. My secret is I am a fishing addict. Fished 20 hours on my 1st crappie day/night on May 4th. When it's a planned adventure there is no time limit except the sun rising. That's sucks, and why it's mostly late afternoon, evening and night fishing. If I get tired there is always a few stretches and a break that involves chugging a bottle of water. Being thirsty makes you tired. Stay safe, stay hydrated.

We were on Balsam last night, but so was this muskie. Chasing our lures and the walleye we caught. Just after dark it hit one of my crankbaits. It took almost a half hour for me to get it to sit straight. I think it must have been tired from a spawning fight with a larger muskie. Just a guess, but a likely possibility. After a bit it finally took off, and we went to his dock to fish. Then I went somewhere else to fish.
