Walleye fishing was great, as usual, on Nip last week.
Started off slow with multiple cold fronts, high winds and too much rain.
But once the last 5 days of our trip rolled around, the weather began to warm up, the winds started to lay down and the bite began improving.
First of the week surface waters temps were fairly low 58/59F range…by Saturday they’d climbed to around 68F. Found most of our early fish shallower while the temperature was colder, 15-20’ range. Fish showing on the finder were neutral or disinterested at best. Little to no concentrated bait showing at any depth. We only boated about 15 walleye the first 2 days, drifting with harnesses, 2 in the slot.
By Saturday the winds had died totally, the air and water temps started to spike…and the bite took off.
Found schools of walleye (and perch) relating to deeper mid lake structure in the 25-35’ range. Bait now showing on many of the deeper reefs as well as some insect hatching activity showing on the surface (however, little to no shad fly evidence as yet).
The two of us were fortunate to catch 100 walleye the last 3 days (usually fishing around 4 hours a day). 23 in the slot with another half dozen over in the 21-24” range (plus a couple dozen bonus jumbo perch).
No 28-30” fish this year but we kept looking.
Caught all our fish the last 3 days on bottom bouncers and double worm harnesses. Several double hookups during those last few days.
The passage of the cold fronts and the warming temperatures seemed to be the key to more fish activity during the week.
Good luck in the coming weeks. Looking forward to some other posts.
