CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY – Fish Contamination Advisory

Fish in the Nottawasaga River (Jack’s Lake area) are highly contaminated.

According to the latest Guide to Eating Ontario Fish:

https://www.ontario.ca/page/fish-consumptio...ort?id=44298000

Children and women of childbearing age should not eat any size of:

• Yellow perch
• Walleye
• Rainbow trout
• Northern pike
• Black crappie
• Chinook salmon
• Smallmouth bass
• Pumpkinseed
• Rock bass
• White sucker
• Redhorse sucker
• Carp

The Nottawasaga River contains 12 species of “do not eat” fish—the highest number of all of the 2,765 tested fishing locations in Ontario.

The source of the dominant contaminant (PFAS/PFOS) is the fire school at CFB Borden, 46km upstream. The PFAS/PFOS flows into Bear Creek, then into the Pine River, and then into the Nottawasaga River.

Current contamination levels indicate that fish in the Nottawasaga River will continue to exceed safe consumption thresholds for the foreseeable future.

Catch and release only fishing is strongly advised.
