We were using tip ups and spreaders with live minnows . Some we lost near bottom and some partway up would come unbuttoned.
Interesting. Where do you guys pick up your minnows. I use to fish tip-ups and I have 2- and 3-way spreaders that I haven't used in ages from my Simcoe days. Was thinking about using them when I hae a family "fishing" day (often it's not really fishing but more like day time camping on the ice and running around doing all the things I would never do fishing...like cooking, eating real food, trying to building igloos, snow ball fights, etc., etc. so tip-up with live minnow may help to increase catches and maybe get my toddler son interested in fishing...he has seen me pull up a laker while right beside me as I was explaining the marks on the sonar and what was happening to him with the laker chasing...popped out of the hole, he looked at it and said, I don't like that fish. The mouth is too big .
We got minnows in Haliburton. I dont think there is a shop in Huntsville or Minden or Bracebridge anymore. My son thinks there is a shop in Graven hurst and in Ullswater.
Yep, no more bait shop in Huntsville. Didn't like the Gravenhurst shop. The CT in Gravenhurst will carry minnows sometimes but was told they go pretty quickly and then won't restock after their shipment is done. And I am getting more lazy with age to drive to go get minnows (being able to catch some fish without bait has made me even lazier

Invite me to hut I’ll bring the good Haliburton minnows for you haha
Hey Mykola, you are always welcomed to come up here (with/without your good minnows). Can't promise any fish though I've always appreciate the help and info. you have provided in the past. My issue (as others on this board that I have fished with will know) is that it can be hard to coordinate a fishing trip (and my trips are usually short, like 2-3 hrs of actual fishing time and then I have to leave) and I usually like to get out during the week and I tend to be a fair weather (I would call it "wiser") fisher too but... Let me know if/when you are wanting to visit and I can try to be free on that day....would love to learn more of how to fish too of course.

Looks like a great time. Nice when our kids start to share the work load and we can start cashing in on some of their legwork.
When we go out on Nip now all i really do is pull the trailer, park the trailer and unload the machine. Son does all the packing, setup and takedown. Getting pretty easy for the old man.
I still tie all the leaders though as my son has yet to master the Tornado Half Hitch for fluoro. Have had hooks snap, fastachs snap, swivels break but a properly tied THH on fluoro has never failed me since i started tying them 8 or 10 years ago.
