W got to the ice hut Friday at 2:00 and got set up. The afternoon was slow with a couple missed hits until dusk when my wife hooked and landed a small walleye which is rare in this lake.
Saturday morning my son went to the hut by himself and caught a couple whitefish and an eight pound lake trout… his best ice lake trout. He was super excited. We joined him for the afternoon and had great action all afternoon . We ended up with two more lakers and two more whitefish. We probably lost about as many as we landed.A great afternoon of ice fishing.
Sunday morning started slow but we had a great burst of action between 9:00 and 10:30 and another burst right around noon. We kept a laker and two whities.

Nice....esp. with the walleye (they are rare-ish but I am hearing more reports like yours). All those lost fish, were you guys using tip-ups and live minnows? Just wondering why the losses. Were they at the hole, on the way up, etc., etc. Wondering if they were biting lightly.
Oh and nice colour fillets.

We were using tip ups and spreaders with live minnows . Some we lost near bottom and some partway up would come unbuttoned.

Interesting. Where do you guys pick up your minnows. I use to fish tip-ups and I have 2- and 3-way spreaders that I haven't used in ages from my Simcoe days. Was thinking about using them when I hae a family "fishing" day (often it's not really fishing but more like day time camping on the ice and running around doing all the things I would never do fishing...like cooking, eating real food, trying to building igloos, snow ball fights, etc., etc. so tip-up with live minnow may help to increase catches and maybe get my toddler son interested in fishing...he has seen me pull up a laker while right beside me as I was explaining the marks on the sonar and what was happening to him with the laker chasing...popped out of the hole, he looked at it and said, I don't like that fish. The mouth is too big .

We got minnows in Haliburton. I dont think there is a shop in Huntsville or Minden or Bracebridge anymore. My son thinks there is a shop in Graven hurst and in Ullswater.
