Well, we’re cooking the last breakfast as we speak… then time to finish packing and hit the road home.
It was a great trip, and fishing was good overall. We had to work for them, though, and the cold weather made moving around a challenge. Thank god for insulated huts and buddy heaters! I’ll post our chicken-scratch note pad with fish #’s in a second here if I can figure out how.
Since we were all fishing in our huts most of the time, we truely don’t have many fish pictures.
Biggest Eye ended up being caught our first evening - really nice, healthy 26”er. Most others were just under slot, then we did catch enough for a fish-fry, and have a few keepers to take home, too. Caught a handful of overs, too. Nice mix of sizes. We landed 1 Whitefish. A nice, tall and thick 24”er and lost another Whitie in the hole when trying to land it - I keep bugging the guy who helped try to grab it saying it was way bigger than the one he landed, which I think it was truthfully, but who knows. Good fun. Just really surprised and happy to see some nice, healthy Whitefish. (And no, they weren’t Cisco/herring/tulliby)
Only 1 pike all week - didn’t measure. Maybe a hair under 30”? Acted like a timid little walleye, too, which surprised me. Don’t rush in a smoke the bait at all.
Walleye bite was light for the most part. Nipping at it, and sometimes so light you wouldn’t feel them whatsoever, but just lightly lift your rod and the tip would show weight… Most fish came on baits tipped with minnow/minnow parts. A handful of the fish were more aggressive, though, coming in like a bat-out-of-hell and you just knew they were going to inhale the bait. Love when that happens!
We acted like tourists yesterday and went over for some photos with the locally famous, “Whale Rock.” Pretty cool to see. I love things like that… they develop a sort of lore about them in my mind when I read about other people exploring them. I hope everybody keep the tradition alive and freshen up her paint as the years go by. I’ll show my kids one day. Thanks to Lake Nipissing Outfitters for helping me track it down, by the way. Much appreciated!
Oh - I’m sure you all know this, but if you need some cold pints and great wings, hit Lu Lu’s in Callandar. Everybody was friendly, food was great. I went for the house made wing sauce - Lu Lu’s Special? Something like that anyway. It was hot sauce made with garlic butter, and it was friggin’ awesome.
I’m sure I’m forgetting some fun details about the trip, but that’s alright. Great week as usual. And although we haven’t even left the cottage, I find myself already looking forward to unlocking the door on day 1 of next year’s trip.
Gotta love Lake Nipissing. Gotta love the Hardwater.
