1st Open Water Outing, windy with a chance of whitefish

wootang89 and I headed up to Haliburton for a trip out on Nick's new boat to chase some early season whitefish. Water was about 40F and the wind picked up in the afternoon, later gusting close to 40km/h, thankfully the sun was out for most of the day.

It took some time to find an active school of whitefish but once we did we caught 4 in quick succession. Around 35' off a reef we have fished both open/hard water.







We ended the day with 3 lake trout (all released) and 5 whitefish (several more were lost as is often the case with them).

The one whitefish I caught right before we called it a day:

Definitely a fun day out. My son lasted longer than I expected. I bet today the bite ratio would have been on fire. We marked non stop fish and the livescope showcased them just cruising through one after the other. If they all bit, our boat would be overflowing with whitefish, I’ve been there before!

Zero fuses were replaced, boat worked great even with the cold start.

Didn't take long to find some nice fish.

No fuses were harmed in the duration of this outing.
I did discover a fault in the power trim though, will need to be addressed and likely the cause of fuses blown. Struggles to drop the motor, needs a little help.

Sounds like a great day. Lets hope that trim is or was your issue.

Check the trim switch on the motor itself. My friend had that issue with his older 70 hp Johnson 2 stroke. It failed when he was trolling and high waves came had built up quick. The motor kept raising itself and eventually tangled downrigger cables. He had to cut one to get the boat control back. He also had a few fuses blown before it happened, and the remedy was to replace the switch.
