Weather’s been rough to say the least on Nip since about the 17th/18th. Several fronts with a decent amount of rain coming through one after another. Some less than manageable winds with them. But everything started to clear out Friday and Saturday’s been calm for the most part. As soon as the fronts went thru fishing picked up immediately on Saturday.
In just less then 4 hours two of us caught 30 walleye total, 9 in the slot, 1 over. Catching them a bit shallower than we normally do this time in June. Generally we’re seeing the most fish out on structure in 30-35 fow. Today we caught many of our better fish in depths of 18-27’ both around and on top of mid lake reefs and humps. We’re using strictly worms on double spinner harnesses, off bottom bouncers either drifting or using the electric motor to move around. No sign of shads, yet…and not much else hatching off the water, that I can see. Although all the perch and many of the walleye we’ve caught have been packed full of what looks like black midge larvae from the bottom of the lake. Definitely invertebrates they’ve been heavily feeding on. And there’s a lot of the yellow, white pine, tree pollen floating on top of the water out on the lake.
Surface water temps were around 66F earlier in the week…but got up to 69/70F by mid day Saturday
Hopefully the better weather continues into the coming week.
