Cloudy with a chance of bugs, and walleye., Trip # 4

Drove up to Cameron Monday, fishing by 7pm. We fished a different lake and there was more bugs than fish. So many June bugs floating on the water, you could hear the fish picking them off all night. Mosquitoes showed up right on schedule, with a multitude of other flying pests. As soon as a headlamp went on, the bugs were swarming. LOL. We caught a few walleye using crankbaits that went down a few feet...The same as last week and Joker jigs again. Up and down the shoreline, all the way to where the river current slows after it spills into the lake. Tried to stay in 4 to 6 FOW. A bit of a SW breeze after dinner then nothing. Then a breeze, then nothing again. Another lake with lots of baby walleye, a very good sign.

We caught a few in the slot, my friend kept three. I released all mine to grow except this unlucky fish. It swallowed my lure and bled out. Had a family BBQ with this one and the big walleye from last week. Not much more to report, worst part was the bugs down the shirt/jacket...how they sneak in under my toque has always been a mystery as well. Mowed the lawn again and came back to town. Sure wish the price of gas would come down. The new car is amazing on gas, still adds up though. 500km round trip plus gas for my friends boats. Still worth it though, to be on the lake at night. We mostly targeted Bass & Muskie back in the day. Like everywhere, the fishing pressure today is 20 times that of 50 yrs ago.
Now, sadly, I believe Pike are in there now and are even considered a destination fish there now. I believe this will certainly put pressure on the Muskie. I hear it's due to earlier spawning times for Pike putting Muskie at risk, although not sure.

Glad to hear the Joker is still coming thru for you.
I was going the end by saying hope you have 'tight lines', but not sure you need it...lol.

The bugs this week came out in full force after the wet weekend! We had an explosion of june bugs as well here in north Scugog. Monday evening my dogs were chasing them all over the yard and birds were feasting off the ground Tuesday morning under the trees. Spent every morning this week watching turkeys and killing mosquitos - supposed to be the other way around but the gobblers aren't cooperating this year, still on live hens and our local birds don't give a hoot about decoys

Cameron being the smallest of the 8 bigger Kawartha Lakes, does have it's challenges with the amount of pike in there. Inevitable changes happen when a new species is introduced to any lake. When they built the lock system, in turned into a highway for fish. Slowly but surely the fish will migrate. Thank you for your comment Fozzy.

More June bugs this year for sure, than the last couple. Your luck may change on the turkeys this week. Cool mornings should bring the birds out. Good luck to you sir.

This year is considered super El Nino. That means any thing could be weird.

It's rare for me to fish in the sunlight in June, July or August. Spring and fall I try and fish right around the clock. The sun is not my favourite, in the summer. This will continue to be a strange year for weather. Less hurricanes down south, a bit more rain up here. It shouldn't be as hot as the last two summers. You can always tell if it's going to be a terrible hot summer. Certain animals add to their homes or dig deeper burrows. Beavers add lots of small branches to the top of their house like a canopy. Yellow jackets make their nests under decks etc...instead of higher nesting areas. Birds wake up earlier to feed out of the very hot and sunny summer days. And more bugs...hot hot summer brings more bugs. I like cool summers, less heat equals less bugs.

So many people have been wishing for a few stable days in a row to go fishing. We have had a few of those days, with a few more to come. There has been some wind and that will continue over the weekend. Great forecast the next few days, but check the wind speed and direction. Every boat has it's limits in the wind, every angler has their limit for fishing in the wind. There has already been a few boating accidents over the past week. Stay safe, wear a PFD and be aware of wind speeds. Best way to fish in the wind, is to use the trees and shoreline for a wind break. Here are two pictures...Bottom picture shows two boats sitting in the calm water, casting into where the waves start. Top picture is where I would position a boat on a windy day to be out of the wind. You can see past that shoreline point, there is much more movement in the water. Windy days can be great fishing, it just depends on an anglers experience handling a boat in the wind. I do not recommend going out in the wind unless you are sure you and your boat can handle it. There is always the unexpected...Boat breaks down, big wind gusts, sudden big waves etc. It's only a fish, it will be there next time when it's not so windy. Good luck to everybody this weekend.
