I was fortunate enough to start fishing as soon as the canals were ice free.
With cold water I opted for a 1/16th oz pink head and white marabou and it made for a fun time under a fixed float from Cool Waters.
When the canal became crowded, I moved to a river where the water was cold and stained at times due to the rains we experienced this spring.
The marabou worked but I wanted to try something different so I worked my way through various soft plastics.
The most productive plastic was Keitech's 2" Easy Shiner, with literally a different pattern outperforming others in different conditions with different water clarities.
Erroneously, I thought I could use my usual soft plastic jighead on the Easy Shiners. I was quite wrong and soon made the switch to a jighead with a smaller keeper and it resulted in the plastics lasting longer and with better action.
I used both Keitech and VMC jigheads, both which worked wonderfully.
While I didn't catch anything considered a true jumbo, it was a fun time with the float going down and not having to fuss with live bait.
