Really? I am the first person report bass fishing. Went out on Sunday with my son to avoid the windy Saturday. Water temp was still low but the fish were active. All my fish caught on spinner bait.
I will report another thing about the spawning. THEY ARE NOT DONE SPAWNING YET.

We had a great opener despite the ever changing weather. The bite was changing regularly, as were the optimal bait. Had a great afternoon on Sunday throwing frogs with bass breaching all around trying to nail dragonflys.

Interesting observation on spawn. I saw a lot of empty beds that appeared to be "used" (no sediment), but no eggs and weirdly didn't see any fry schools either. The larger females caught were empty and in deeper water. Bit of a head scratcher.

Some guys who kept bass for dinner told me that every single fish they cleaned with full bag of roes in the belly. I am talking about Rice. Fortunately I released all the fish.

Today on Scugog for a short trip. A little bit wind with overcast sky. Fished 3 hours and the result is good. All fish caught by fast moving baits. I tried my new hybrid hunter jr. It works well for shallow weed bed. The little bait really suppressed me.
1, The hybrid hunter is not a crankbait.
2, It goes through weed pretty well.
3, Can cover water quicker than any other lures.

Nice catch! I always go to zone 15 lakes during the hottest days.

Nice bass!

I hit Simcoe for it's opener. I always like to explore and look for beds (I don't fish them, but I like to watch the bass).

This year I found lots of fresh beds, but I only found one with a male still guarding it. I was surprised based on the cooler spring we had.

The bass were chomping on mayflies, so it was a tough bite. We did manage 4 between the two of us, with a chunky 5lb as the biggest.

Fished a smaller local lake yesterday and saw lots of action but not many bites. Bass were jumping all day long, couldn't tell if they were hitting flies or breaching after chasing minnows at surface in 8-14fow. Saw a few largies in shallows visible around the boat as well, but not interested in anything we put near their nose. Damn frustrating to retrieve a cast only to have a bass breach where your lure was not 5 seconds ago. Tried many different baits and presentations. Minnow schools were large and active in deeper water. In shallows the fry schools were abundant and it looked like bluegill had moved in on the bass beds - a lot of beds had bluegill or sunfish guarding them. Only 1 decent bass landed on wacky, missed 3 surface strikes. Never fished bass with flies, something tells me that would have been the trick yesterday on this lake. Our buddy got a few walters and smallies on drop shot. All in all lovely day on water, just not a lot of catching.

Next time you head out to fish, try using a Rebel Pop R with a feather tail! It's my favorite bait for those conditions you just mentioned, and it's the only one I use when I'm fishing on Balsam Lake. Happy fishing!

Ditto on this advice. The pop-r is my go to when the water is calm. I use it as deep as 15 feet and get SMB as well as LMB.
