Back to fishing., Trip #8

Had lots of family stuff going on, then the heat came. After the heat and during the heat, the smoke came from the wildfires. Instead of fishing we took a holiday last week at the Windsor Casino. Checked in and stayed out of the real world until the air improved. Lots of good restaurants and T.V. to watch the World Cup. Very nice hotel in the Casino and all of the staff were great. Met a few fishermen from the U.S.A. They told me how much they love coming to Canada to fish. So finally I got back on the water last night. Waited for the thunderstorm to pass, fishing started around 7.30pm. Clouds rolled out, top picture and rolled back in, bottom picture..

I hear Trumpeter Swans a night but this is the first time they invaded the Loons space where I fish at my friends. Sorry, hard to see them on the right. Moon had already set, so very dark on the water

Rain, drizzle, warm, humid last night with a lot of mosquitoes. Got bit a few times before a strong wind blew them away. First time getting a mosquito bite in almost three years. Deep Woods Off on my colthes, always. Liquid garlic on my skin, always. Also cinnamon gum keeps mosquitoes away from your nose and mouth.

Caught/released a dozen 13 to 15 inch walleye. A few rock bass and bluegill...Perch before the sun went down. An entertaining evening but not much excitement. Should have stayed at the Casino. LOL.

This is what my car looked like at 4am. Water/Raindrops stuck to it like frost, with all the humidity.

Hey C.M., your a hard man to please. a dozen Walleye...no excitement?
Most people would be dong a 'strut walk' having those numbers. Just kidding.
I know what you mean....although you caught a dozen Walleye, none were table-size.
Next time, right?

Yes Fozzy, you are right. I should have written that differently. Catching fish is always great. Guess I was expecting greater numbers and size of walleye. My friend and I caught 34 and kept 5 last time we were out in June. With the rain, wind, and air pressure, my excitement was the anticipation of a repeat of that night. A couple of the 15 inch walleye could have been kept, but my personal slot size starts at 17 inches to 19.6 inches on that lake. Walleye are rarely fat enough to keep in the Kawarthas under 16 inches. After 16 inches they start to fill out and grow width and length accordingly. This coincides with the first couple years of spawning. Once walleye reach spawning age, their overall weight increases. Eggs or no eggs, this is the age they start to put on more weight and grow faster than male walleye.

I use a lot of spray on my clothes/boots to keep as many bugs off me as possible. Being out all night most times, you get different waves of many species of bugs. Big bugs, small bugs, bugs that bite hard, bugs that bite and you don't even notice until the next day. Then there are the spiders...I hate spiders, especially at night. Saw your Laker post on the Northern Lakes Forum, nice fish. Haven't had trout in years and years and years.

If any of you young people are looking to make a difference, this may be the answer. Protect Mother Nature, educate people, enforce the regulations. What I would give to be 20 years old again. An incredibly difficult profession sometimes, but equally fulfilling most times. A dedicated person can always make a difference in any career they choose.

Weather looks good for fishing, not too hot or smokey. As always check the current weather before you go out on the water. Never a bad idea to check the expiry date on your PFD, Air Horn, Bear Spray, Mosquito Spray etc. Stay Safe.

I have checked the weather the night before and the morning before leaving and it still wrong. the last 2 times I was out weatherman said very light winds, wrong.

For that job posting I would agree only I'd need to be 50 years younger. My uncle was a CO way back in time in fact would have been one of the 1st.

Good to see you back at it Jamie. I have had a quiet spell. Lost my brother to cancer so we are all dealing with that. I hope to be back at the trailer in Waubaushene by Friday.....been bumping into DB pretty often up there.

It's weird how when they predict bad weather, it usually happens. A forecast of good calm weather can turn on a dime sometimes. Very cool about your uncle, that's going back quite a bit. Way back when I was very young at my grandfathers in New Brunswick, he told me fishing stories. One of the stories was about the game wardens out there. It was common for them to get shot at by poachers or smugglers. Warning shots mostly, to be precise. They had to have the police to protect them sometimes. Finally years later they were issued the proper equipment to protect themselves. Now a CO is equal to a PO in almost all duties.

Oh my, I am sorry to hear that Arnie. It's never easy to lose a member of the family. Especially a brother or sister, the bonds of siblings are precious. My condolence is late, but comes from my heart sir. Please say hello to our fishing brother Dale for me when you see him. Enjoy your time at the trailer my friend.
