Yes, that fish is said to have come out of Simcoe. Records show that there was 136,500 pounds of Lake Sturgeon taken commercially from Simcoe between 1880 and 1900. I know of no reported catches after that until 1956 when a 42 inch fish was caught on a Whitefish lure during January near Jackson's Point. That fish was probably one escaped from a private pond. Are there any in the lake today, maybe, maybe not. If anyone has other information, I would love to hear it.
heard stories from an old coworker whos grandfather used to fish them . he said that couch was the spawning grounds for them and they would catch them travelling through the narrows . also read a report of a boater that followed another boat to see what fish they were chasing . said it was a big sturgeon and the guys let i go . that was a few years ago . and who knows maybe that one i hooked while jigging a williams and couldnt move off the bottom and finally broke me off was a sturgeon . who knows . im sure there are some still swimming in simcoe .

Thanks for that fishhound. On subjects like this, I like to keep my options open, which is why I said, maybe, maybe not. I certainly accept that it is possible. Maybe Kempenfelt Kelly or Beaverton Bessie were/are Sturgeon

such and awesome fish!!!! any commercial fishing done for them devastates the population as they can take over 20 years to be mature enough to reproduce. we did a study on them in school, there's a few that were tagged in superior and have been doing a shoreline tour for the last 15 years. strange that they would travel so far. although it is a nice shore line
hopefully they are in Simcoe and making a recovery

They can live to be well over 100 years old. If there were sturgeon in the lake in the 50's they could still be alive. Im sure that commercial fishing didnt catch every single sturgeon in the lake. I think there are a few of them still out there.
