I can well see how and why people get upset each yer when folks go through ice and need a rescue.
But...some points to consider.....the Police will never say the ice is safe..
it is not always out of towners (GTA)..look at last year.......same 2 donks from orillia on 3rd rescue in three years.....
We have laws agains drunk driving, but it still happens
So , in the end, no matter how many warnings , signs, posts or whatever...an annual percentge of mishaps will happen.
same with snowmobiles, same with house fires, same with skiers, same with boat owners.
Should they pay.I'm neutral on that one
Do I have sympathy for these induividulas.no
Am I happy to see no lives were lost, yes
Willhound, I agree with you, fines will not do the job......some were fined last year.minimal, the real question is were those fines everpaid? I can see that if this desire tohave set fines keeps coming up, I see Insurance companies lobbying for yet another rider.....something to think about

Gonna sound like a real hard nose here, but my opinion is that fines don't work. Too many people have more money than brains. Want to fix this problem? If you go on the ice when you have been officially warned to stay off, no rescue. You are on your own. They will either smarten up and pay attention, or Mother Nature will do it through natural selection.
I have only one reply to this whole topic:
You can't legislate intelligence and common sense into people

My mentality exactly. I'll admit i go out on questionable ice, and was one of the first out last year, as well as one of the last off.
However, I have invested in good gear and leave fully prepared to get my own butt back to shore each and every time I go out.
I realize there are times I put myself at risk, but I will NOT put any EMS (or anyone else for that matter) at risk to save me from my own stupidity.
