People eat crap food and smoke and still get healthcare, don't they? People drive on icy roads, get in accidents and get airlifted to hospitals. Do you propose we leave them on their own? After all there probably was a warning that it's slippery...

Relatively very few people get rescued from ice fishing. It always amazes me how much crying there is on ICE FISHING boards when someone gets rescued while ice fishing....

Sorry but the endless crying is just tiring. Everyone was saved, it ended well. Don't worry about your tax dollars, 99% of them will be spent on less useful things than rescuing those poor souls who made a mistake they'll likely remember forever.

Seriously, move on. In our world this really was a relatively minor incident. 9 people died on the roads in Ontario only during this weekend.

It happens because some people are just stupid/bad decision makers. People have been drinking and driving since the first T-model's engine was cranked, and people will still be drinking and driving in their hover cars in 2075. Like somebody said earlier, you can't legislate/law-make the stupid out of some folks.

I say charge them all! What ever the cost of the rescue was it's the only way they will understand.

The folks that go out on thin thin thin ice yes you are not right in the head. Sorry ,let's alll talk about something different. Thanks,Matt

well said. I should have been more clear in my last post. I dont think that the rescue is a bad thing. I just believe that everyone should be responsible for themself, and if they were, there would have been no need for a rescue.

Blue fox, not %100 what you were saying, but ill bet anything that you've been told smoking is bad for you more than they were told the ice is unsafe.

why do you need to smoke anymore than they need to fish?

My theory is if you want to risk your self or others going out on thin ice then deal with it when you go threw...

Ya, i agree with most comments. But the one thing we all agree on, is that people who go out on ice THAT THIN.....are clearly retarded!!! And, its their life, their problem! What they do cause for me is "grief" from my wife, and other family members who hear this stuff, and panic when i'm out on ice a foot thick!!!! So, THANKS FOR THAT YOU CLOWNS!!! Otherwise, the money it costs to "rescue" doesn't bother me. Lots of Tax money gets wasted. I feel bad for the rescuers though.

I would wager that in order to get fined/court processs etc. that in the end it would cost taxpayers more than the rescue.

Someone stated earlier thy mad lots of mistakes while younger........Put me in that boat as well and i still do.

Anyway, it's over, but I'm pretty certain this will be revisted again in the spring for round 2!

You and several others made some points that I hadn't thought about. I haven't beeen griping in the forum but I've been vocal with the wife, brother, etc. The one thought that came to my mind is that the emergency workers are trained for this. And they all keep training for events like this.

Well, there is no better training than the real thing. Drills and practice don't have the same adrenaline "rush" that real life provides. Practice runs allow the trainee to focus on the skills but the real training for police, fire, medic and soldier comes from truly being under pressure. Kudos to the service workers for a fine job done. And Thank-you. Society will NEVER be free from people in need of emergency or public service. Keeping this in mind,I shall gripe less about the tax dollars.

Works for me, I would disagree with them paying the cost if it was not such a blatant case of not using common sense. Maybe a hit to the pocket book will make them and others who hear of the fines think a bit more next time they want to venture onto the ice.

I disagree with the fine but would like to know where the money goes? The rescue is paid for by means other than the ice rescue fee of $1500 that the town of innisfil is charging.

Where does one draw the line in terms of whether a fine/bill is in order?

Police issue warning all the time to stay off roads, stay away from fast moving creeks and rivers.......

I understand peoples frustration with others stupidity, but fining them is not the right answer. It sets a very poor prescedent for Canadians going forward.

Are we going to pay for our healthcare next, because some people use emergency rooms and doctors more often then others???

Keep a cool head guys, and think this through before you ask for something that's against our rights.

ps......If you guys want to make this a pay-per-use society, I should be eligable to get a property tax refund from my municipality because I don't have kids. I don't use the teachers time, classroom space, paper, etc. but yet, I still get whacked for public school funding taxes. Where's the justice????

Careful what you wish for is all I can say.......We are Canadians, not Americans. Don't lose sight of that!!!!
(no offence to Americans)
