Hi Folks:
Seriously thinking about buying a 6 man/person Clam Command Post pop-up ice hut. Previously we basically sat out on the lake in the elements but I finally decided it was time to get out of the wind and cold.
Would appreciate any comments from other members (postive and otherwise) about this brand and/or model of ice hut or recommendations on another brand.
I looked at several different brands and styles of pop-up ice huts but after checking them out they became a blur and I was more confused than when I started.
I recall posts on this subject in previous years and remember the major recommendation was to buy a bigger pop-up than I would probably think I would need was strongly advised. Consequently, I decided to focus on the 6 man/person size although we would probably only have 2-4 persons using the hut most of the time.

Hey Nancy, I have the Clam Base Camp (4 man) pop up, and love it. Easy to set up and light. I know a few guys who have different pop ups. The Clam and Eskimo brand pop ups seem to be the best in my opinion. I actually like the anchors on the Eskimo brand a little better than my Clam. They are easier to get in the ice. Cheers!

Bigger is definitely better when it comes to a hut. If you have a skidoo and weight is not an issue then go big. With everybodies tackle, lunch, and sonar boxes that adds up to another person or two in space.I'm a walker so weight is an issue for me. I usually fish as a twosome in a 3 man Eskimo hut. If we go with more than 2 people we bring another hut and set them up side by side.

I completely disagree with the bigger is better mindset, unless you can pick and choose the days you venture out. I think itd be pretty tough setting up one of the large pop ups in any substantial wind. I have enough trouble with my 3 man pop up.
No matter your anchoring system, strong winds will pick up and ruin your hut. I use cambucle straps and bent most of my anchors as well as snapped a hub on my shelter.
If money is not an obstacle id go with two smaller huts.

i used the four man ICE CUBE for a few years and it worked great ...but really only comfortable with two fishing .....the six looks great and if you do fish 3-4 then i`d go that route .....i think the 4 man are easier to handle and transport but are smaller for sure .....i recently bought an ATV so i now have a Clam Yukon TC flip over style ,that we pull out ....but i will always have a 4 man pop up for times when we can`t use the ATV to pull .....i`ve also had a small one man Clam flip over for about 8 years now and love it when i go myself .....flip overs are even quicker to pack up and move ,if you move around a lot......Clam products are good but i think the older models were better made....we were looking at the Eskimo Fat Fish ,before we bought the ATV, it seemed like it was a bit bigger than the clam 4 man and our Ice Cube ....floor space for fishing is the big thing ....weight can be important if you`re a walker ....

Hi Folks:
Thanks for your comments. I am a bit clausophobic so I/we decided to go a bit bigger and buy the 6 man/person Clam ice hut. If it ever stops raining I am planning to set it up in the driveway and check it out.
I won't be worried about the weight of the ice hut because we have an ATV and Santa dropped off a new Yamaha 450 ATV - which of course I am still waiting to try out.

I have one of clam the 4 man huts. There great for blacking out holes, getting out of the wind ect. The thing that bothers me is that when you heat them with propane the moisture level gets very high and starts to condense on the inside. You also get damp. It becomes uncomfortable to go back out side.
I haven't field tested it yet but dieing to! The issue i'm having is that I have some issues with putting it in a Toyota Matrix. If you have a truck than you're laughing. Not heavy at all. Just long. Set up is easy and tear down is the same. Really large carry bag for it.

I use a 4 man pop up and find it is cozy for two large guys siting in folding chairs. There is just room to fish two holes each. If you are heating it with Propane, keep some vents open at the roof line. A good hut should have these. It is important not to just keep the moisture down, but let out the Carbon Monoxide that your heater is producing.
