Definitely Pefferlaw, J.R.'s (John Redding). He certainly knew how to put you on fish and really worked hard moving his huts following the fish. Good guy, passed away quite a few years ago from some type of cancer. Was in the business with his brother and another older man, operating out of a house down one of the roads behind the restaurant that is right there at the Pefferlaw River bridge on Hwy. #48.

Hey BWB,
after posting about the house JR operated from, I now remember as you stated he was at the Golf course parking lot right on the Hwy. I had forgotten about that location. That's where he started first... you parked your car there for the day and he picked you up in an old van and brought you back at the end of the day after fishing.
Steelheader, you say "still there" ...are they still operating as JR's ? if so it must be the brother continuing with the business ?

Fished with JR for many years in the 80's and early 90's. Ran his office out of Johnston's Marina and Restaurant for some time, moved up the road closer to the lake in behind the restaurant and also used the golf course. Depending upon snow cover, he would run the Bombies right over the course to the lake. I always wondered what kind of damage was being done to the course...lol.

He used those old beat up vans for awhile to. He left this earth way too early.

John's brother was Tony Reddings. He carried on after John for awhile with his own small operation. He really knew how to keep you on the fish as well...maybe even better than John. Haven't heard about Tony in some time now.

JR was the only operator we went out with. Went there so often that he would let my buddy and I use his personal hut and gear,we were new to ice fishing back then, I think he felt sorry for us we would hook fish but rarely did we land any of those big lakers caught plenty of smelts herring don't remember catching any whitefish. If I remember we started fishing on Simcoe in 81 mid teens can still remember freezing my ###### off fishing out side -10 with a 25kmh wind, those were the days!! Thanks for the memories Spoonplugger.
