Port Bolster - Perch Fishing, Sat Jan 19th

Well it looks like we have a small group of us going out this Sat. Consensus seems to be to meet at Casey's around 7am this Sat Jan 19th and then head out to the perch grounds. Please note Casey's is having a promotion for us, 50% off the price of minnows if you are a member of Lake Simcoe Outdoors. I know a few of you will be getting rides from Taj, so we'll try to coordinate something with him. I will walk out as usual, pulling my 2 man clam, heater, hand auger and fishing gear. I believe FSH FRK is coming as well and bringing a 4 man hut. So we have some shelters. Not sure if it's feasable for some of us farther away to car pool. Let me know what you guys want to do exactly.

I just checked my map and walk out to 20-22 fow is approx 1 km - 1.5 km.

Of course this trip is highly dependant on the weather conditions this Sat. Winds showing 15-20 KM SW which isn't overly favourable.

All things being equal I'll be there, looking forward to it. It's been a long time since I was out on the ice for Perch. I'll be looking for a ride out, someone to punch me a hole or two and a spot in a shelter to warm up from time to time. Dang me, sorry to be high maintenance but this getting older stuff sucks. Last night I was trying to rig an ice rod for Perch and had difficulty seeing the line and even more trouble with the tiny snaps and swivels. These stiff and stubby fingers don't work like they used to; in the end, I gave up; gonna try again today in the daylight.

These winds are now being forecast at 30+ for the weekend.
Whats the ice thickness in that area?

Thorahguy, myself and the rest of you that are a little more senior than some. There are times when one must except aging gracefully. To do this I have a magnifier light (LARGE) and magnifier cap peck clip magnifier for tying purposes in the field. Tweezers too help pick up line that I can't feel with my chubby fingers. I pre-tie every thing that I can at home and make sure that you have a very bright light to see by. once that is done I know I can still outfish those young.....

In this day and age only silly people freeze, and I think when we where young we proved that we could be as silly as anyone today.

New member on the board. I will also be heading out Saturday weather permitting. First perching of the year and first time setting up my sub zero ( wind got to me last year:) Should be getting to Casey's around that time. Driving a green wrangler. Feel free to say hello!

Thanks for your thoughts Tailfin, pretty much the same as my own. What tweezers do you use? I've tried a couple and found them to provide little advantage. Did I mention that my hand eye coordination never was much good? I better stop, making it sound like I'm depressed, nothing could be further from the truth. I always do my very best to enjoy each and every day. As for being silly when I was young, guilty as charged.

I head up from ajax,westney rd, anyone else come from that area?

PS: I shall make to Casey's around 7:00AM this coming Saturday, too, if wind is not over say 50KM (OR if wind is over 150KM, considering I would then be able to enjoy a free slide or skate from shore to my honey hole on ice, but may never come back to no shore no more;-)

I was planning on heading out Sunday, still am but look at the winds...
There will be snow on the ice for traction Sunday, but not Sat.

Does anyone know what casey's charges for a ride out to the ice??

Last weekend some friends of mine were given rides out to the lake by Casey's for $5 per person. I am not sure if that rate rises as more people are looking for rides or not. Good luck!!! We will be making the trip on the 26th, so sounds like the ice may be twice as thick by then with the weather coming this week.

I'd love to join u guys, but I'm committed to help a family member renovate a kitchen. Just a word of caution. Keep an eye on the wind! It's not nice. Hopefully the wind speeds will diminish for your outing.

Thanks for the info. I am having a knee replaced in a cple months so long walks for me are not a pleasant experience...lol. At least if I got a ride one way that would be half the battle. My knee ached for days after my last outing. The ice was so dam lumpy it was terrible for walking.
