Real cold day and night today, and then warm up to +3C tomorrow Saturday. Nice! (except please, no wind please!:-)

James the mild temps make it a great day to be out there but with a South Wind @ 30 km will be rough fishing in the open .

Thank you baby Jesus i rented a hut! I can withstand cold, snow, rainbut not wind! Hate it with a passion! Mostly hated when drifting a river and the wild is blowing up stream! Grrrrrrr

I agree. It is the wind that will be bad (and the very very last thing I want when ice fishing is wind!)

Perhaps renting from a hut operator a hut would give some getaway from wind.:-)

James if you need a hut you can borrow my portable 4 man . I know you are just around the corner from me in Maple. Let me know your more than welcome to use for tomorrow. I won't need it.....and if I do , I still have one more if I venture out .

I do myself have a 2-man portable hut which I could drag and walk on ice (and I have used it a few times the previous 2 winters on Lake Simcoe, on Lake Couchiching, and on Bay of Quinte off Beleville. My concern with a portable hut when there is strong wind is, it may become a kite flying together with me up high into the open air and sky!;-) I mean even if I anchor bottom corners of the hut with screws to the ice, perhaps? I do have a portable cordless drill for this purpose, by the way). Again, just not sure when wind becomes too strong, if a portable hut will still "stand" firm on ice;-)

So I am thinking when wind is strong, and when I still want to get out and fish, I perhaps basically have two options: Just fish in open air embracing whatever wind blowing towards me, or fish in a rented hut (and hopefully some strong wind will not take rented hut together with me flying into the sky;-( haha.

I think you should fine with the portable. I had mine out last year in deeper waters on kemp and wind was gusting pretty good. She held up !

My portable hut has a floor, so as long as i'm in it, it shouldn't fly away. Although I have had the walls come in -- during high winds. I generally point one of the corners into the wind. But no matter what you do, tomorrow is going to be gusty.

Hey. James, I actually do what Jerry noted and point 1 corner into the wind. When gusty like tomorrow will be; I set two anchors in the ice and attach the straps. I attach 1 strap to my hut and pop out that Side the grab the other strap and attach and pop a second side. By then all is good and I work my way around the hut with the other anchors. I don't pop the roof until all my anchors are in and strapped tight.

I do the same as well . Very first step is always screwing down the anchors first. I see many guys out there start off by popping up the hut first ...Can't help it.

I would have been one of "those guys" the 1st time i used my pop-up it it were not for the info I received from this board. The only mistake I made was not bringing a drill to predrill the anchor holes. Almost impossible to get those things in the ice without drilling. I think I gave up after 3 and an hour and a half later. I have since learned to drill the two holes first
