I'm new to the area and looking for some help getting started perch fishing on Lake Simcoe, we do a lot of summer time fishing but haven't fished on the ice since before Santa grew his beard and have never fished on Simcoe, we plan on renting a hut in the Beaverton area, we have a few light weight ice fishing rods/reels but need some advice on what type of lures/jigs/baits are best for beginners to use, I've read a lot of the recent posts and found them helpful but some advice as to specific tackle to start off with would be much appreciated, I almost spent a bundle this afternoon on ice fishing tackle and decided to wait and first ask for some advice from the people who know, thanks in advance for any help offered

If you renting, they generally supply minnows, tipping a jig with a minnow can be quite effective, or tip different spoons with a minnow. As Howie says, the options are limitless.

I recommend putting a spring tip/spring bobber on the rod tip. Sometimes even an ultralight rod tip won't move when a perch has a bait in its mouth. Just lift up and the fish is on. They work great in a heated hut but outside not so great and freeze up. Any small baits on 4-6(max) pound test line work. You can use two rods on Simcoe - try one jigging a small spoon, the other a set line with a split shot & minnow set up - #8 or 10 bait holder hooks. You'll need needle nose pliers sometimes to pop the hooks out.

Talk to the hut operator before going. They are pretty helpful and will tell you what is working best in their area.

I use either a chartreuse or pink jig head tipped with a minnow, magget or plastic curly tail grub (all colours) . Slab Grabbers work great too. It's like nocd said lures are endless. Good luck have fun and be save.
