First Time on Simcoe - Advice?

Long time reader, first time poster.

Heading out to Simcoe on Saturday (Jan 26th/2013 @ 7-730AM) - planning on parking at Casey's and then heading out to wherever we see groups of huts.

Does this sound like a decent plan? How far do people generally head out?

Any other advice would be much appreciated!

from the looks of things the fish are out deep,20+ foot of water,thats a long walk out but it is do-able,ask what depth caseys huts are and that will be your reference to where you want to be.

As a newbie thats sounds like a good plan. As a courteous gesture when approaching a group ask if your setting up to close. Some prefer all the lake to themselves however those who invite you close are the ones that may help you out the most.

Welcome to the Board Macsauce, make your way out towards Casye's blue huts and I agree with finsfurfeathers if you deside to fish near people ask if it's ok and be about 30 to 50 feet away. Good luck and be safe tight lines.

I'm kinda new to ice fishing too. I do As people have suggested. I head toward the ice towns but stop short of them. I'm one of the first people you will bump into when heading out. I personally do this out of courtesy and the fact I hate walking. I've found, with my limited experience that it works for me. With fishing in general you may have to move around a bit to find them. They're not always in the crowds. Being a newb and not so comfortable on the ice. Feel free to set up in town but please leave a lot of space between you and your neighbour. Everybodies comfort zone is different so you'll have to feel out your neighbour. If he's giving you the evil eye or giving you one word answers to questions you may be to close. Have fun be safe. If you are close enough to feel out your neighbour you are aleady too close.

By reading the depth charts, forum posts, and looking at that picture I am guessing most people fish the 18-25 foot water which appears to be about 300-500m out. Is this correct?

you'll be out 1.5 to 2 km out. 500 meters you are just off the sandbar.

Looks like I mis-read the scale. Makes sense now. That is a long walk.

Bah! The walk is good for ya! Lol. It's not really that bad. And you could always pay for a ride if you think it is.

Don't worry about the 1.5km walk out. It's a breeze.

It's the walk back that seems twice the distance!!!
