night fishing.

So , anyone out there ice fish at night ? If you do is it the same as day fishing? Any tips or info on this and like to see some photos of your night fishing. Thanks. Blue fox

Night fishing for whities and herring can be "Awesome"
The night bite for lakers and perch, pike etc seems a no go (sight feeders)
The old spreader and shiners seems to be the winner ,jigging has never produced for us ..
Anyway ;if you're sick of the crowds and want to try something new ,call an operator and book a hut in whitie grounds... Have fun..

I try and go night fishing at least once a year. Last year we only went once for perch for fun, because of the ice we couldn't venture out deep. We still caught throughout the night but it can be very slow at times. We were still able to make a nice fry and we even invited two guys fishing in the hut next to us. I think they were more excited than we were. The best night I had was two years ago with Steve's ice Huts. Caught three whites one was a 8.1 lbs hog my PB, lost three and we also caught a 36" ling cod. We have been skunked but that's what the rye is for

Never had much luck for perch in Beaverton. Very slow but the odd surprise came along a few times.

If you are after crappie, then I say yes, night fishing by all means (but make sure you are sitting on top of some big school of crappie)!

i also got whitfish through the night with spreaders,my goal this season is to catch a laker for the first time trew the ice..lol i got the gear and gonna find me one i hope lolol

night fishing is great for whities but that is only fi you're in a hut IMO.

i couldn't imagin roughing it at night where you can't see.
also aside from the fishing the veiw is awesome.

I remember about 8-10 years ago i was fishing at Floyd Hales fish huts out of Beeverton and the fishing that day was the best we'd ever had so we called and said we'd like to stay out over night as well. Well some massive cold front ended up coming in and i remember it was -54 with the wind. my car said -33 when i got back in it the next morning
they left the next hut open for us in case our heater went down or something like that. that cold front absolutely destroyed the bite. we were not getting a nibble, so i decided i'd run over to the next hut (15M away) and try it. i picked up my spreader and tip up and ran over to it. when i'd gotten there my minnows were frozen solid. i mean SOLID it had been as if they were out there for hours rather then seconds it was actually kind of funny, except for the fact that i had to go back and get more minnows.
i fished that hut for a bit but didn't get a bite so when back in to ours. i think thats the only time i've ever been skunked for whities at night. sometimes it's been worth beating the night just because the early morning Laker bite is really good on some days and you have to be there at that exact time so that you don't miss it.
Never tried perch at night but as an earlier poster said i think they are also a site fish.

Back in the 60's we would only go out at nite for WF......

Recent years, there is a good bite on at nite, but as mentioned it's in a Hut and spreaders work best.

I was out with Caseys a few years back and had phenominal perching until 11 pm, then they cut out and whitefish turned on.

For sure you will get herring again now........which must be released and we always got into some decent smelt action as well.

If the bite is off, then it's a long night, but at least you can get some sleep which is impossible to do during daylight with all the activity going on on the lake.

Once upon a time we used to get of whities by the bushel full. Besides whities the only fish we used to get lots of at nite is walleye.

Truly, those were the good old days though.

Oil heat.........uggh, major headaches and greased faces , 2 way spreader with salties on them only did the trick!

Yes, I remember the wood stoves and the Coleman Lanterns. When I was a teenager I serviced the Coleman appliances as a part time job. People kept putting leaded gas in them even though they knew they shouldn't. Sure did plug them up in a hurry. I still have a Coleman lantern as back up at the cottage which I still heat with a decades old wood stove, works for me. Back to the Whities, they were a lot smaller back then; we have a different strain now. My father in law lived on the north side of the river in Beaverton and worked on the south side. During the safe ice time in the winter he would walk to and from work on the ice, a much shorter trip. He had a hole enroute where he would stop on the way home and catch a Whitefish of two for dinner. The water depth in that area is 17 ft. max if I recall correctly. You won't find many Whities there today.
