Gilford - Ice +8 inches?

Hi all. My wife and I are heading out tomorrow off Gilford. I have heard there is over 8 inches of ice. Is that the case? Would anyone who has been out caution being out there yet ? I have heard a bunch of claims of cracking ice, over crowding etc. My wife cannot swim and our gear is pretty basic so wanted to hear some first hand takes....thanks

It is never safe going on new ice without the right equipment. The ice depth varies. Floatation suites, as far as I am concerned, is a must. Once the ice is thicker, it is not as important.

That is definitely reasonable. We are planning to go out with a well known hut rental. Does that change things at all? What are others hearing about ice conditions at Gilford?

You did not indicate that you are booked with an operator. That does make a difference since he is knowledgeable of the ice and being in a hut does mean you are not walking any distance, so all should be good. Have fun.

Hi GF; Agree with Bob ..With hut operators it's part of their livelyhood and they run safe.. You should have a busy day, ask your operator what's producing and follow advice.. It's hard to beat the single shiner on a #6 hook about 1' off bottom.
Watch out for those "Silver torpedos" (Herring) they are very plentiful off Gilford now but note they must be released asap as there is no open season at present. The perch are plentiful and you should have fun..
