Hey all,
Heading up to a back country lake with a buddy this weekend to try to get on some Lake Trout. We had some luck there this fall canoe trolling with big ole spoons (my first open water Lakers...what a rush!).
We are going to attempt to hike in with live minnows but whether or not they survive the trip is another story. Ive only ever fished hard water Lakers once before and it was with a live minnow and a bell sinker.
Any tips or lure suggestions for some Lake Trout rookies?

If your minnows live try using a tip up and a very small hook and weight put it a foot off bottom and let the minnow do the work. If possible find 50 -60 feet of water. Thats how deep I normally fish in lakes in haliburton area for lakers

Check you regulations for the lake you will be fishing if you haven't fished there before as ome lakes are 1 line only. Just a heads up hate to see anyone get caught.

Elk hunter, thanks for the depth tip and suggestion on the small hooks. We've got a flasher so we'll drill around to target 50-60ft. Really hoping we can keep those minnows alive on the hike in. Made a little minnow basket yesterday so we can keep them under the ice once we get there.
Moose, thanks for the heads up on the regulations! Something I wouldnt have thought of. Just checked the MNR regs and there are no exceptions for the lake.
Now if only it would stop snowing...a foot of powder is going to make things interesting!
