Good day, im looking for some advise on how to catch whitefish, lure, depht, etc..
I caught a small one last year while fishing for perch and the meat was AMAZING. Since then my wife cant stop asking me to find the way to catch them on lake simcoe. I went couple times last spring at Shanty bay but only caught one laker.

Im not asking for gps coordinate but was I close to a good area to catch whitefish or was mostly for lakers.

Thanks in advance for your help. If anyone would like me and my wife to join you for whitefish fishing, i could bring you for some walleye fishing in exchange. No worry i got everything(shacks, auger,Argo, etc..)

Caught a small whitefish and the meat was AMAZING? Or is it a herring? (just kidding:-)

I also asked similar question here a couple of days ago (about where to walk onto ice/lake for whities/lakers), and got a few replies with great help and info. Also if you check out some of the latest whitefish and lakers reports on this board (posts just below yours), I think you shall get some more useful info. Good luck.

(PS: I can't wait to try my luck for the first time this winter for whitefish and/or lake trout, say this coming weekend, weather and ice condition permitting, that is) (And trust me: If I had not had to work during weekdays, I would have been on ice somewhere this very moment;-)

Thanks for your reply but i was looking for some info a bit more detail then looking trough to whole site to find something.

And i know the difference between a lake herring and whitefish, protected species vs legal.

what i mean by small was like 24-26inches.

steph491 . . . Shanty Bay is more known for Lakers than Whitefish but both are caught there. Whitefish, like all fish, swim so the schools move around. Where are the fish today and what's working are probably the two most difficult questions to answer. Please read the Fishing Tips at the top of the page where you will get some excellent general guidance as to where might be more productive and what lures and techniques have worked best. After that, except for reading recent reports, you're on your own, just like the rest of us.

Almost forgot to mention, I would not consider 24 - 26 inchs a small Whitefish. Back in the day they were much smaller, only a pound to a pound and a half and were just as popular a target. Today's fish are a different strain and get considerably larger.
