After a late start from home, and a few pull overs to adjust the sliding Argo tarp - made it to Devil's Lake parking lot over an hour later than had planned.

Quite a few trucks/trailers in parking lot - most seen for the three winter times I've been there.

Drove to the access point (old truck) to Sheldon's. Noticed the snow machine tracks and distinct Argo with towed sled tracks traveling over land.

Crossed to Sheldon - went to Connie Lake access point. Saw the 4 sleds pulled over to the cottage. I followed the Argo tracks across to Connie, and Victoria Lake to Wolf Lake - to meet a team of two from this "Northern Lakes" forum.

These two had read my message from Friday night and thought would meet me out here to try for the Splake! Great!!!! Didn't get their names - hope they post!

Anyhow - the fishing.

Marked lots of fish in 20 to 22 FOW. Some fish marked in 5 - 12 FOW. Fish did show interest but not enough for what we used. I drilled about 30 holes - after I went back to get my auger as it fell out at the last steep ascent into Victoria.

The other Argo left after a three or so hours - no fish. Ten minutes after they left - I caught my only fish of the day - a beautiful small mouth at about 1.5 lbs!!!

Beautiful - only in context that 2 weeks previous had caught a smaller bass in Sheldon Lake - full of worms in the tail!!! This one in Wolf was clean!!!

While on Wolf - saw two sets of snow machines - group of 4 and group of 3 go up and down the lake.

I left after about 5 hours on Wolf. Fished some more in Devil's Lake - only a few hits but marked lots. Off the ice for dark. Devil's Lake certainly has some deep and steep holes!

The link is my 'spot' record (foot prints) of the trip today. it still has a few from the Sunday before where I traveled only Sheldon Lake - they should disappear tomorrow evening. Note that the tracks disappear from SPOT after a week.

Overall - a relatively easy trip for the Argo. Took me about 45 minutes to get to Wolf - following the other Argo's tracks. Total trip including return for Auger took about 1/3 tank of gas from Argo. Temperature was at or just below freezing most the day - dull day with some flurries and wind. Just not sure what went wrong with me and the Splake. Will have to try again next year - earlier in season to see if better.

I think today / tomorrow will be one of the last days for decent ice for this season!

Thank-you for the well written fishing report.

Sounds like you had a great adventure and i'm glad you met up with some other board members..

Splake fishing can be tricky. They are finicky and will travel around in schools. Setup for fishing like you are fishing for perch, that generally works for me.

Cheers,
Jerry

Hard water time!

Looking at going again to this area sooner - January?

Any interest in more of a planned trip? With a few teams on the ice - should be able to figure out the splake.

Last year I posted my intent the night before - great that other Argo arrived. (I was late but they got to Lake!)

This Lake is a 'trip' - by snow machine or Argo - not bad. And is a 'few' lakes in - isolated to large extent.

And - there may be no splake left in lake?

I am serious enough to consider a Saturday / Sunday in early January - overnight camping.

Thoughts / suggestions?

Hello, new to this forum but came across this post and I am very interested in fishing both Wolf and Sheldon Lake. I snowmobile through these lakes all the time as my cottage is near by. Never have tried fishing these lakes. I did however try Smudge lake which is a little south of wolf and apparently was stocked with splane back in 2009. I've tried twice now with no luck. I did mark (something) when I set up close to shore in 10 FOW but no takers. Never caught a splake before so Im not exactly sure how it's done.
I am willing to try wolf or sheldon lake with you guys if you want to set up at day. Probably only have 2 weeks left in the season. Please PM me or reply to post if interested. Would like to chat about where you set up and why depths the lake has. Very little info on these lakes.
Hope to hear from ya !

Branders - I've not been out that way this year - at least not yet.

Sunday is my only day fishing this week and I'm dedicating to BOQ for last day on walleye through the ice.

Perhaps I may go out on another weekend in March. With all the cold weather so far likely good for more than a couple of weeks.

Two years ago we went out to Wolf 23rd March and hadn't been as cold . . .
