Hello all,

I have been reading this forum for a number of months now and thought it was time to add my 5 cents. Yep the penny is gone so it isn’t 2 cents any longer.

I have been coming up to Lake Nipissing all my life, of which I am in my 53rd year, and my family has been making the trek for over 75 years. Two years ago my wife and I purchased a place on South Bay and hope to move here permanently in the not too distant future. While we are transplants into the area from Southern Ontario we do feel like it is home up here. We are very much concerned with the health of Lake Nipissing and would like to be able for us, our children, grandchildren, and numerous generations to come to be able to enjoy fishing for and if desired be able to keep a few and enjoy a nice fish fry of pickerel (the name I was brought up with) on occasion.

I have only been ice fishing once and did not fair very well and thus most of my experience is during the open water season. I have experienced numerous years where the fishing has been great and a number of years where the fishing has been not so great. Our experience over the last 10 years or so has been quite good fishing with a noticeable decline in slot size fish being caught. The last couple years the catch has been 90% or so under the slot size whereas 3 to 6 years ago we would be more in the 50 – 50 range slot size to under slot size. Not sure what this is attributed to but it is our experience.

I do not know what the answer is to the issue at hand with the advertised decline in pickerel stocks in the lake but it would be fantastic if all parties could continue to get together and discuss factual evidence to help formulate a long term plan to save this species and this lake from further declines. There are a lot of people that depend on the lake for their livelihood including folks in the tourism industry and in the commercial fishery industry as well as numerous folks like myself that live on or around the lake and thus have a stake in its survival. I hope the MNR increases efforts to come up with accurate data showing what pressure sport fishing is actually putting on the lake. I know I do not see anywhere near the number of boats out there in the spring / summer / fall that I use to 10, 15, and 20 years ago. Back then if you were not on your favorite fishing hole by 7am you were too late. Now you can have a bacon and egg breakfast and head out around 9 and still have it all to yourself.

SKAMO, thanks for posting all the reports even though it sounds like they are so far away from finding any kind of solution to address this current situation that in the end we may all be sol.

Neil, welcome aboard. I am sure you have seen a lot of changes over the years you have been going up to Nipissing. Let's hope all future changes are positive ones and your family and all can continue to enjoy this lake and still enjoy a good fish fry when we want. Hope you enjoy this board and participate with some fishing updates.

ThorahGuy, like the new avitar picture - sunset over your favorite spot on the island - nice.
