I realize that during most of the summer, the fish are further out and that makes a kayak impractical. But I was wondering, about working some of the bay heading up towards Sturgeon Falls. Bass, Walleye, and may be Pike at some of the drop offs?? Is this realistic or wishful thinking??

Hi Kayaker13,

I have actually tried kayak fishing on the lake in the past. While it sounds like fun, you have to be respectfull of the lake (and in my case my body weight....lol), meaning the wind can literally pick up on you in seconds. It sounds like you have some experience in this regard, but just sayin.

Perhaps you should start out in Calander Bay first. There are some nice weed beds and shallow areas you could enjoy that produce fish, and not have to worry about the gale winds that come out of no where on the main lake.

As for going up the shoreline from the Bay towards Sturgeon Falls, it would seem to me like the majority of the shoreline that way is rocky (Bass?). If you move out about 10 or 20 feet from shore, the sand bottom takes over. There are more than a few streams and small creeks and outlets that flow into the lake on that side, so perhaps those areas would produce good fish, even in the warm summer water.

Not sure about any drop offs that way? Perhaps someone more familiar with the Sturgeon end of the lake (west side) can advise.

Good luck...oh ya and make sure you have all the safety gear, permits, cards and stuff in the Kayak....I found out that the OPP sees a kayak the same as a small boat or pleasure craft (as far as safety gear goes).
