Hi Everyone,
So my girlfriend finally found my fishing vest and threw it in the wash, in her own words "This thing stinks! You are Grossssssssss! How can you wear it???? Disgusting........." and so with my fishing vest now smelling lavander spring fresh and bouncy soft ---- this ends another season of steelheading adventures...
I had a good Winter / Spring 2013 chasing chrome in all the rivers and creeks, watching the conditions carefully and with some great success. I did experiment a lot with gear and baits and it was fun both trying new things and of course catching fish...
My outfit for the season was an 11' 6" noodle rod, shimano spinning reel, raven floats, fluoro leaders, spilt shot and small sharp hooks #10-12.
Here is the rundown on best performing baits:
1) Roe /spawn sacs (caught the majority of fish)
2) plastic trout worms (10% of fish)
3) Beads (10% of fish)
4) Rubber eggs (5% of fish)
Here is the colour rundown of spawn sacs used:
(From Best to Least productive)
1) chartreuse
2) peach
3) white
4) orange
5) blue
Of course some baits/colours worked better on some days, depending on water clarity, fishing pressure, time of year, water temperature and factors I just didn't understand. But it was fun trying to figure out what the fish wanted on a particular day/outing, and that's what fishing is all about. I caught fish in all sizes from big brutes and reel screamers to shakers and egg eaters. The majority of the fish caught were steelhead / rainbow trout, with only a few small resident brown trout this year. I will be back at it in the fall, until then -- here is the fish porn..
