Wow, I feel even worse now for hooking this guy so bad!

Just for some additional info in this fish, I caught this guy last Tuesday in about 15 ft of water, temp was about 15C, and it was at night (8 p.m) where I normally catch regular walleye. Won't give my spot away, but let's just say it was on the north east side of Lake Nipissing, no structure around (sand bottom) and was likley swimming around with the schools of regular walleye trying to fit in...(he must have been the "blue sheep" of the family...lol..).

Again I would like to thank everyone for the awesome info and replies about this. This board rules and I have learned a great deal already from it. Thanks to those that run and moderate it, much appreciated!

If anyone catches one of these this year, please post some pics. I would be interested to see if they are making a comeback or not. The one I caught was pretty young, and I am thinking that there are likely a bunch more out there from last year's spawn and/or perhaps this years.

Congrats on catching a famed blue walleye..

There are a few swimming around especially in the northern lakes.

The colour difference has to do with a mutation in the colour pigment / slime mucus on the fish. A cyano compound or something. Nevermind the science, a great fish.

Very nice. I think it is a silver walleye. We have caught one's like that and thought they were silver walleye.

Yeah, I believe it is a sauger. We have caught them in the Ottawa River as well. They look just like walleye except for the color.

it's a walleye, sauger don't have the white tip on the tail and sauger have random bloches and spots on there dorsel fin, I beleive it's a blue, Northern lakes have them and also blue pike.

Agree. Blue walleye. they also have 'silver pike'

Think of it as an albino person...but in a fish...like Jerry said it's a pigment thing more common up north.

I used to fish Nipissing for many years, and I would guess, over a 10 year span, in a group of 10 to 15 fishermen, we caught a Blue Walleye 3 or 4 times. So they are definitely rare, but known to be in that Lake. Nice catch, but too bad it was hooked so deep.

that is 100% a blue walleye, it is not a sauger.

I have caught a ton of blues (perch as well) fishing the nipp, more so than any other body of water I fish.

Good site here guys, hopefully will enjoy the reading. I used to work at a lodge on the Sturgeon river, and did lots of fishing back in the day. We used to catch the blue pickerel in deep water at the mouth of the French. I didn't know they were still in Nip.

It would appear these blue walleye are in the Ottawa River as well as we caught one when I was fishing up there the other week.
