Yesterday was a rainy day but we did make it out for a few hours. I thought the fishing would be good but it was kind of slow. We did manage 4 pike in the 20" - 24" range which were released, a few perch and also rock bass but nothing picture worthy.

We headed out this morning around 9 and Glenn was on fish very quickly. First drop down and a few minutes later he had a 27" chunky pike in the boat and into the livewell. A few minutes later had a 13" perch on and into the livewell. I was using a large dead minnow from yesterday and finally hooked into a nice fish, 30" pike and into the livewell. This fish took half the body of the minnow but I still had the big head so was still fishing with that.

Glenn then hooks into another big fish, a twin to the one I caught at 30" and into the livewell. I had a few nibbles on the large head but nothing hooked up. All these fish were caught in generally the same area within 1.5 hrs. Our livewell was was getting full so we decided to head in and get showered and have some lunch before heading out again.

We picked up our friend Jay and headed to one spot where he hooked up an oos bass but it was kind of slow so headed back to the channel where we caught the fish this morning. The wind had picked up and we were drifting fairly quickly but Glenn managed a 20" pike and Jay also caught a 22" pike. The large minnow head finally came off and I put the last large minnow and ended up getting a 24" pike which we released but he took the minnow. Our net has been taking a beating and the fish were starting to get thru a hole that had started so I had to do some mending.

I changed over to a spinnerbait and had a few followers with one hookup but he came off and then I rigged up a dropshot. This produced a smaller perch which we released and then had to head back to drop off Jay to get ready for work. Unless the wind dies down a bit I think that is it for today. The next few days look quite nice so hopefully more fish to report tomorrow.

Here is the first fish, 27" pike...

Here is Glenn's twin, 30" pike...

Looking back at the camera times, all these fish including the 13" perch were caught in 1/2 hour.

Thanks guys. The next few days will be interesting since we are out of large minnows but still have some smaller ones. I am going to try and use artificials for a bit to see what I can catch.

We just took a tour of a trailer that is for sale here and are seriously considering getting it. We just have to crunch some numbers.

All around nice and nice..

Great pics, report and pictures.. You guys are having a blast!

For artificals try minnow look-a-likes - since big minnows are producing.

Maybe a large shad body on a large head jig so it sits and swims upright while you drift.
Spray some scent on it too..

That would be very good news getting a trailer on location..

Raining here today pretty much all day..

Thanks for the update Nicole, I needed that.

Great report and great pictures as usual, thanks for posting.

Good luck with the trailer purchase, you guys seem to know the water in the area pretty good so it would be nice to have a place to call your own in the area.

Keep up the reports and enjoy the rest of your vacation time.

Keep it going

I agree with Jerry.

Try and find some gawdy plastics and they should work just fine.

We were out earlier this morning because they were forecasting rain starting around noon. It started out slow as I figured with the east wind but we still managed to get around 5 smaller pike in the boat as well as a 12" keeper perch. None of the pike were picture worthy so no pictures today.

It started raining around 2pm and has stopped for a bit but we are going out for dinner with the owner of the lodge so can't do a quick run in the boat. Tomorrow looks like a great day and then bass opener on Saturday.

P.S. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a go tomorrow.

2X on what Jerry said. One of my fav things to use is a paddle tail swim bait, like a swammer, Carolina rigged. works great! Looks like a crippled or dying minnow.
Cheers!

This morning was a beautiful one and since we still had quite a few smaller minnows we decided to head out to our perch spot from earlier this year. It seemed like they wanted the drop shot only as I was hooking up fish fairly quickly and Glenn was just feeding them with his minnows. The first fish in was a 12" perch and into the livewell. A few smaller fish later, I pull in a hog at 14", my new PB. I also brought in a 11" perch which seemed like a baby compared to the larger one.

Bayliner mentioned a spot near the perch area so we went by to check it out. It was an area full of current and these large fish swimming around and they looked like trout. It was only 4 fow but they seemed quite skitish and were not interested in anything I threw at them. Maybe when we return, I might bring our river rod and roe to see if I can get a hookup.

We headed in for showers and lunch and Glenn broke me down so we went out and picked up a dozen medium shiners. When we got back on the water we went first to our failsafe spot. On the first drift, Glenn hooks up a 27" pike and on the second drift, he hooks up a 28" pike both of which we kept. I was getting a little discouraged as I hadn't even had a nibble. On our third drift it was my turn. A huge hit and away she goes!! I had the fish on for about 5 minutes and it made at least 6 big long runs and I thought for sure it was a muskie. Well, on it's 7th run it came off We never even saw the fish it had taken off so far so will never know what it was.

We figured we had hit the area pretty good so decided to move to our other favourite spot in the channel. The wind had picked up and we were drifting too fast so moved over to a nearby bay we have had success at. About 10 minutes here we thought we would be out of luck but then I got a weird hit. When I got to see the fish, it had twisted itself in the line but we managed to get it in and it was a 27" pike. It had a mark on it's back and was kind of skinny so I let it go. About 10 minutes after that, I got another hit and this one took off on about 4 runs before it came in. A 28" chunky pike which we kept and now have our limit of 8. We were getting hungry so decided to head in and hit the bass up tomorrow.

Here is the 14" perch...
