With Saturday being bass opener, we headed out to catch some bass with our friend Jay. The first couple of spots were slow and we were only catching smaller pike except for a 2lb bass Glenn hooked into but it came off. We were all using different artificials to see what the bass wanted, with me using a dropshot with twister tail, Glenn using a jointed shallow diving rapala and Jay using everything in his tackle box but mostly crainkbaits and spoons.
The wind was kicking up so we headed to another spot which we figured was a bit sheltered. We were still drifting fairly quickly but I managed to get a couple smaller largemouths in the 1.5 - 2lb range. I also caught a 28" pike and since we had our limit of pike, I asked if Jay wanted to keep it and he said sure. He has not eaten too much pike and asked if he could get a lesson on de-boning it properly which I did after we dropped him off.
The wind had picked up even more so we went to another nearby spot which I figured would have some nice smallies. We got there and luckily it was out of the wind. We fished here for an hour and managed a few nice 2lb bass and then I brought in a bigger one which weighed almost 4lbs. I also caught a few 11-12" perch which we kept for Jay as well.
We were getting hungry so headed in for a late lunch but by this time the wind had really picked up. We ate lunch on Jay's island but decided not to head out fishing again because of the conditions. I then checked the forecast and it had rain first thing in the morning so we we decided to pull the boat out of the water until we return. Hopefully it will be this coming weekend and we can move into the trailer but we will up again for the long weekend for sure.
In all, we had a great vacation and it didn't seem to fly by too quickly and we also have the trailer to look forward to.
Here is my biggest opening day bass for 2013...
