Hope everyone caught a few Walleye pre-shads...was out on the lake today and you could see the shads emerging from the lake. Just in time for July 1st fireworks crowds at the waterfront!...lol. It seems that when the shads come out, the Walleye bite tapers off. Likely full of shads and not interested in any of our bait!
Figured I would throw up a picture of what seems to be a very sad Sheephead (Freshwater Drum) I caught today. They just started to bite now, so be prepared to get one of these in between walleye.....fun to catch.

I was out all weekend and caught a lot of pickerel over 40 in 2 days of fishing. I was surprised that the shads were not out in full force yet. The fishing should be still ok for the next couple days.

Wow, wouldn't it be cool if they didn't arrive at all!
Perhaps the shads I was seeing were early bloomers? They did seem to be smaller than the usual ones we see in town. Regardless, I am sure they are not far off. They usually decend on the poor peeps out at the waterfront when they come to see the fireworks on July 1st.
Glad to hear everyone is still catching walleye....makes for a better outing if you catch fish! Is anyone catching any over or within the slot? Hopefully there are more than a few large ones to sustain the population for the next year. I have caught and released a few in the slot that looked pretty healthy. I won't get into the politics of it all....that's another entire string of topics already covered on this forum.
I am going to go on the hunt for some Muskies soon. Hopefully this will take me to parts of the lake I have never been before which is always an adventure.
Be safe out there, old lady Nipissing is relentless sometimes.

I was talking to a guy I work with that lives at west end of lake and he saw a few last night small ones as well. Would be nice if that's all we get but don't hold your breath just your nose

I heard that Callander is covered with them. I work with someone who doesn't know what a shad is... never experienced them. We showed him pic's online and he is quite freaked out.
