Hey everyone. Just joined the site and wanted to say hello to everyone. I have lived here, in North Bay for a year now and just bought my first boat. Now my question is, where is where to fish for walleye and what are the best tactics? Thanks for your time!

Welcome aboard slowboy72 ... You came to the right place. Lots of great people here, contribute and you'll make friends fast.. Please acquaint yourself with the board rules and most of all enjoy our forums..
For starters, click on the large Walleye Fishing button near the top of the forum. Also, I'd be surprised if some of our members don't give you some general guidance. Meantime, I suggest you browse the past posts in this forum, there's lot of clues to be found.

Thanks for the info ThorahGuy and Bayliner, it's a 2012 Alumacraft 165, Lunker II Tiller with a 2008 Mercury Sea Pro 25 hp 2-stroke. It's a good size starter boat for me. Went to Callandar Bay last night with my daughter to try and catch a few but, no luck. Felt like hitting my fish finder a few times though. What a tease. I must be doing something wrong.

HI Slowboy72, glad to hear you are getting into fishing on Nipissing. Nice boat by the way, I am sure you will have loads of fun on Nip.
It took me a bit to figure out old lady Nipissing so no worries (over a year!). I didn't have the resources like this board, so you are well ahead of the game. You were right in hitting Callandar Bay first off...too bad you didn't score. While I can't give you exact details for where (board rules), if you go out around 7:30 PM on any given night, have a look at where the majority of boats are (Hint: they may be hidden behind or in between islands). I have had better luck when I troll slowly around, bouncing a chartreuse or red and white 1/4 oz jig with a worm or leech off bottom. Also, don't be to strong on setting the hook as I usually rip it out of the poor things mouth and miss a good majority (Bass fisherman from long ago...lol). I was told once that walleye's defence when hooked is to open their mouth wide, so imagine yourself setting the hook when that happens!
If you still are struggling, drop me an inbox message and I can hook you up with better details. Always glad to help out the sport fishing on Nipissing.

Sorry about your luck...I also see lots on my fish finder...they are definitely picky sometimes. If you stick to it, you will figure them out. These hot days and storm systems rolling through the area lately don't help as it must send the fish all over the place.
I forgot to mention to you that if you find you get nibbles but can't hook them, you should tie on some trailer hooks (or some call them cheater hooks). Basically its about a 3 to 5 inch piece of line with another hook on the end of it, tied to the first hook. Sometimes when the bite is very light, you need to do this to catch them.
I have little experience with the Sturgeon end of the lake, but I do know there are some lunkers out that way. There are also some nice lodges and camping places if you ever feel the need to stay a while with the family.

I have two go to fishing tactics I use on Nipissing. The first is a chartreuse jig head with the same colored twiters tail...always tipped with a piece of worm and the second is the old hook and splitshot combo. The only thing different with the hook I do is add a piece of a twister tail body to the hook. I slide it up through the center and over the knot of the line to hook. We use two medium sized sllitshots about two to three feet from the hook (with half worm).
We find these techniques work well and do best when using a bow mount electric motor in the 12-17ft range along shore lines and lislands.
Hope this might help put some fish in the boat for you. -Jeff

Jeff,
thanks for the tips. I have tried both recently with mild success. The spit shot seems to be the catch all set up. Been fishing the weeds with a bit of success. Will post pics this weekend. I've been hording them for a bit. Well, it's 530 am so I got to go fishing. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Id scroll down to the exceptions section for lake nipissing it says walleye and perch closed from Oct 15th until dec 31st. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but lake nipissing is closed to walleye and perch and I would sure hate to see anyone get caught right now with those fish in the livewell.
