labourday fishing, shore fishing

We come up to North bay and fish nipissing every may off shore, at sunset point just on lakeshore there.. we always have great luck with pickerel and pike.. get some bass but there out of season..
we want to come labour day and fish off shore, same spot... anyone have any idea what we may get? any luck at all? bait times.. is the water to warm?

Hi Bob,

Not sure if you are after any specific fish, but from what I know, walley will move in to feed early morning and around 7ish (PM). All other species of fish you can catch pretty much any time of day. Worms, minnows or leeches work well. Plastic white or yellow grubs or tube jigs also work in a pinch. The fish I have caught seem to barf up small cray-fish in my boat livewell...so go figure? You have to watch out for the snaggy rocks on sunset point so make sure you cast out pretty far to make the sand bottom.

Fishing from shore at Sunset Point in September....you may get a walleye, but chances are you can also catch any of the following fish:

1. Small Pike
2. Pearch
3. Sheephead (Freshwater Drum)
4. Bass / Rock Bass / Sunfish

If you are having no luck there, you should also try fishing in the Lavase River, which is just down the road from sunset point. Take lakeshore drive south and turn on Premier Rd (you will see a car wash there). Take Premier road all the way to the end and you will see a park, and a boat launch. You can fish right off the launch or walk along a path beside the river. I have caught many awesome fish in this river from shore (my kids love it).....Pike, Walleye, Silver Bass, Catfish, Perch.

Thanks for the help, with the colder weather we were hoping it may be better, in may we always had really good luck there, so we know all about the rocks

drove by the river, never tried it.. hopefullky we have luck.
secondly if no luck is there anywhere to rent a boat in the area?

Most of the boat rental places are on the south shore at camps and resorts. There are a couple in West Nipissing, but that may be a bit too far for you from North Bay. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $200 for a day depending on size of boat and motor. I am unsure if there are any places in town that would rent you a boat. Someone may want to chime in here and let Bob know if they rent boats?

Check out Bayview camp or some of the other fine lodges and camps located on the south shore or close to North Bay (see awesome links above on this site...they might just be the ticket for you).

I have a feeling that you will catch something at sunset point or the Lavase river. My experience this year is that due to the late thaw, weird weather, brief shadfly season and reasonable water levels, the fishing is still good and going strong this year.

So we were told by some passerby that no one is catching anything near the shores by sunset park and the point there at Nippissing even out in boats?
Anyone confirm if true or not?
We are going regardless up at sunset point of the shore there.
Chance for pike pikeral or bass? Just the enjoyment of catching something

I can't comment specifically about sunset point, but from my experiences in a boat on the north shore of Nipissing (say from government dock to lavase river) walleye are biting very well between 7:30 and 8:30 pm in anywhere from 10ft to 15ft of water. Bass and Sheephead are always in the mix, and don't seem to be on a clock like the walleye. I have seen people catching walleye and the odd pike on the government dock (kings landing) also at night.

Good news!
We will be using minnows. Any other advice?
