Went fishing today at the mouth of a river with Gowlunker. We managed to hook a few but only landed one. The fish were pretty active with lots of aerial acrobatics. Mainly threw spoons mixed with some rattling raps. Saw some other guys float fishing in the distance and they were doing well. May have to bring the float rod also next time. Anyways Gowlunker hooked into this fish but we couldn't figure out whether it was a rainbow or a salmon. It was kinda low light and I was looking for some pink hues to identify it as a rainbow but didn't notice any. I'm hoping one of you more experienced river fisherman can help us out. Sorry not the best picture.

Well with the picture it could be a chinhohead, hard to see the tail fin for spotting or the mouth for colour. If you still have the carcass, check the tail fin, if it has spots only in the upper half, it's a coho, if it has spots in straight lines and the adipose fin has a black rim, it's a rainbow. Spots all over the tail randomly is a chinook.
Going by the anal fin, long and short depth, I'm going with a chinook.

Here's a colour link to all the different ones. http://www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/glsportfish...Ontario2012.pdf

Actually after looking at the chart and based on the anal fin, it does appear to be a Chinook

I was looking at another picture I took of the fish. It looks like it had random spots on the tail and dark mouth. Probably a chinook then. Fish was released so can't confirm.

Another question: is that a spawning fish? Seems kinda small to be mature.
Thanks for the reply guys.

Trout have white mouths, coho have black gums and chunook have black mouths. That is the easy rule to follow.

What BWB said , plus tail id works asy enoug also. Not a great photo but salmon, no Coho.

Not all spawning chinnies are large , actually a fair number of 3 year olds go up rivers and do not make year 4 and other ...well they just don'e grwo...."runt of the litter" so to speak

I caught one (my first on a pin) in the credit that looked the same as that. Size and colourings. People on the river said same thing. Jack chinook.

Definitely a chinook, nice fish, looks like it could still be an eater.
