On Friday, we arrived in Gananoque around 3:30 and knew there wasn't much time to fish so after helping the owner quickly with something, we got to the boat and had about an hour to fish. It was a cool northwest wind so decided to stay close to the dock and maximize fishing and minimize cold travelling time. A 2 minute run to one of our spots and we were fishing. We couldn't get large minnows and had some pinheads left from the week before so put one on a dropshot and casted out. The wind was blowing through my jacket so while it was sinking, I decided to do up the jacket. When I started to reel up the slack, I noticed quite a big weight on the end. FISH ON! First cast, first drift, first minute!
It was a nice chunky 28" pike which we kept. Thinking this was the beginning of a good night we fished on but that was the only fish that wanted to bite during that hour.
Knowing it was going to be windy in the afternoon, we woke up early Saturday morning and headed out. Because of the wind lately, we haven't been able to fish one of our best spots but it was doable on Saturday. Not a sniff or nibble until almost 10am. Then, WHAM! big weight on my line again. I knew this fish was good as it was actually moving the boat as it tried to get off the line. After a quick fight and great net job by Glenn, it was in the boat and it was BIG. I learned earlier this summer, take the picture and then measure it It was a 35" pike which ties my PB which was caught earlier this year. After a quick photo and measure it was back into the water and not needing much reviving, left me with a big splash. After that fish, all we were catching was perch and not on the large size. The wind was picking up and it looked like it was going to rain so we called it a day.
After doing some more chores for Gayle, we checked the long range forecast and the weekend coming was still looking good. After a bit of filling her up with wine, we asked if we could come back next weekend and she said no problem. YEAH!!
This morning was too windy and wet to get out so we cleaned up our trailer site of leaves and branches and headed home but thankful we get to come back one more weekend.
Here is the 28" pike we kept...
